New Boys Are 100%

Newly-promoted Hungerford Town made it two wins from their opening two matches in the Vanarama National League South on Monday night after beating Oxford City 2-0 at Bulpit Lane.

It was City`s first competitive visit to Hungerford for more than twenty years as the Crusaders made their home debut at Step 2 level in front of a crowd of 285.

The first half saw Hungerford having much the better of the chances, but it wasn’t until 3 minutes before the break that Mike Jones broke the deadlock with a header.

The hosts continued to press after the break and on 64 minutes doubled their lead as substitute Stefan Brown latched onto a pass and rounded Jack Stevens to score.

City had their chances but were second best on the evening.

Chelmsford City made a winning start at home under new boss Rod Stringer as they beat Margate by the same scoreline.

The Clarets went ahead on 10 minutes through new signing Shaun Jeffers' spectacular volley.

And they doubled their advantage on 38 minutes when Shamir Mullings volleyed home from close range at the far post.

St Albans City, who won on the opening day, had to be content with a share of the spoils with Wealdstone at Grosvenor Vale.

The Stones, who also drew at the weekend, twice fought back to claim a point.

City opened the scoring after 11 minutes when recent signing Dipo Akinyemi took full advantage of a poor back pass from Josh McLeod-Urquhart to beat Jonathan North and roll the ball to Junior Morais to net.

Wealdstone were level just 2 minutes later when Elliot Benyon was found unmarked at the back post and he fired across former Boreham Wood `keeper James Russell for the equaliser.

But City were back in front 5 minutes after the break when a long throw found Louie Theophanous and he fired low into the corner.

However, Wealdstone levelled for the second time after 63 minutes when Ricky Wellard picked the ball up on the left edge of the box and fired low past Russell.
