Iron Getting Closer To Breaking Away-Day Wait Says Dean

Scunthrope United manager Jimmy Dean feels progress is being made on the road as they try to hunt down leaders Tamworth.

Last night’s 1-1 draw in the Lincolnshire derby at Boston United cut the gap at the top of the National League North to four points.

The Iron went into the game after scoring 12 goals in their last two matches as the club won for the sixth time in seven at Glanford Park.

But away form is holding them back, and they’re without a victory on their travels since the middle of August.

Dean feels his players are getting closer despite seeing another Connor Smith goal cancelled out by Jordan Richards five minutes after Scunny went ahead.

“It felt like a proper derby, Boston gave a great account of themselves,” the manager told the club’s video player following the deadlock at the Jakemans Community Stadium.

“Our players stood up to be counted. That wasn’t like the recent away performances. They put their bodies on the line. We knew we had to be hard to beat and we were, it was always going to be hard work.

“It’s progression all over the pitch, we showed personality without the ball, but without really putting our foot on the ball. We didn’t show our quality enough. Boston never let us settle, and a draw was the fair result. It wasn’t our type of game, but we coped well with it.”

There are more chances to get that elusive three points on the road with a game at Blyth Spartans on Saturday before Tuesday’s visit to Banbury United.

“Seven points from three games is a fantastic return, and if we go and win on Saturday this draw is a fantastic result,” he added. “This is the first of three tough away games.”
