April's All-Stars Claim The National League Honours

By Sam Elliott

It’s time to meet the season’s final award winners after nine months of twists and turns jam-packed with ups and downs.

Dean Brennan won’t want to be reminded of the amount of time and toil his side have put into their campaign.

The Barnet boss was proud to finish second but the honour of being runners up counted for little in the brutal play-offs as Solihull Moors ruthlessly swept them aside on Saturday.

The Bees boss is probably still not in the frame of mind to find the positives but the results before the semi-final no show further demonstrated what a good year they actually had.

Nobody scored more than Barnet last month, and before last weekend had lost just once at home in 12.

Beating Oxford City, FC Halifax and Kidderminster, they bit back to draw 2-2 at Maidenhead before securing second place with a draw against Bromley, who ended third. Still the award won’t mask the hurt.

Even when it’s dicey, do you ever really doubt Maidenhead United?

The Magpies slipped into the bottom four with weeks to do but escape artist Alan Devonshire always finds his way out.

Sam Beckwith was brilliant for him and collected the Player of the Month accolade as he helped to get job done. It was another season of punching above their weight for Maidenhead who rode the rollercoaster of the National League again and ultimately finished securely in mid-table.

Nobody out-scored the Magpies in April as they ended in top form – finishing with one defeat in their last six games.

Beckwith notched the winner in the win over Hartlepool and set the tone with some steady displays when teams around them were losing their cool.

The club’s fans know he also offers a key attacking outlet as the team secured their National division future with a game to spare thanks to wins over Eastleigh, Hartlepool and Gateshead.
