Deeney Sold to Lambs

Worcester City have sold Ellis Deeney to Vanarama National League North rivals Tamworth.

The deal will see City receive a nominal fee plus a 20% sell on clause should he be transferred again. The player would have been a free agent in the summer and would have left the club for nothing.

Deeney, who joined the club in January 2012 and was the club captain, has been transferred after last week’s game against Corby Town, which saw him substituted after a lacklustre performance.

Worcester`s joint-manager Carl Heeley said: “Ellis has been a solid performer for the club for a number of seasons now and we will always be grateful for his loyalty when most of his team-mates left the club and the end of the St George’s Lane era.

“He has struggled for form of late and not been his normal self and we were all very disappointed in his actions after being substituted last week. We discussed the situation on Monday and it was clear that Ellis did not want to be at the Football Club and he felt he needed a change, hence the transfer being made. It is disappointing to lose a player who has led us to some great memories over the past two seasons but we now require every single player to be committed to the same cause of climbing the league table.

“We would like to wish Ellis the best of luck with his future career and thank Tamworth FC for the professional way they have concluded the deal.”

Tamworth player-manager Andy Morrell said: “I am delighted to have signed Ellis. He is someone that we have been monitoring for some time and a lot of hard work, by everyone, has gone into getting this deal done.

“He is a strong, confident and competitive midfielder who possesses a vast range of passing and has led by example each time I have seen him play.

“I am sure that he will be a huge success here at Tamworth FC. A number of clubs from higher levels were interested in him, so it is a real coup that he has joined us.

“The length of the deal shows not only our belief in him, but also his commitment to Tamworth and our plans for the future.”
