Darlo Boss Watson Won’t Be All Smiles Until Job Is Done

Steve Watson says he won’t crack a smile until Darlington are safe - and even thrashing Scunthorpe United couldn’t summon a smirk!

The Quakers’ emphatic win over the collapsing title challengers saw the club haul themselves to within just goal difference of safety.

A fourth National League North win in a row was the highlight of a demanding season which now has legs - but just don’t expect to see a beaming Darlo boss prowling the touchline.

“It was a fantastic night for the club, we came up against a very good side and have beaten them convincingly,” former York City and Chester manager Watson told the club’s YouTube channel.

“There are people standing behind the dug out telling me to smile more but I’m just focused on getting us to where we need to be. Hopefully I’ll be smiling on the 20th of April!

“We were on the front foot and the players carried out the instructions to the letter. It was one of those nights where everything seem to just work out.

“When you’re 4-1 up with the season we’ve had you still can’t be comfortable but it was a brilliant performance.”

But if you’re a Darlington players, don’t let the gaffer catch you swatting up on the league table or relegation rivals’ results!

“I’m telling the lads to put their phones away in the dressing room!” Watson said. “We can only affect what we’re doing. It’s a really good spell winning five out of six. We’re going in the right direction but we can’t think about anything else except the next match.

“We’ve got a few injures, we’re down to the bare bones really, and we’ve got a local derby at Spennymoor coming next on Saturday and we need another three points.”
