Chester v Wrexham: Last Five Meetings

By David Richardson

It's one of the most fierce rivalries in English football and tonight, Chester and Wrexham will do battle again live on BT Sport at 7.45pm.

The cross-border derby is anticipated to attract a crowd of over 4000 at the Chester Swansway Stadium for the first time since the visit of Wrexham on April 19, 2014.

The 'bubble' restrictions have been lifted which is why an increase in the attendance is expected but the fixture remains all-ticket. Wrexham have sold out their 1,200 allocation.

There have been some classic meetings over the past few years so we've taken a look back at the last five times these two rivals met.

Wrexham 1 Chester 0 - 07/03/2015 - Attendance: 6,430 (1,200 Chester)
Wrexham end a seven-year wait for a win in the cross-border derby thanks to Keiron Morris' superb strike after just eight minutes. It ends Chester's four-game unbeaten run in the rivalry and Blues boss Steve Burr isn't happy with the playing surface, he says: "It was a poor game of football, but Wrexham adjusted to the conditions better than we did. I don't want it to sound like sour grapes, but we had to fight the pitch before you could get the ball under control. Sometimes it happens."

Chester 3 Wrexham 2 - 03/10/2015 - Attendance: 3741
John Rooney's stunning free-kick for the hosts sets this thrilling derby in motion. Wrexham's Dominic Vose equalises from the penalty spot before half-time but Luke Shaw and Kane Richards give Chester a two-goal advantage in the second half. Connor Jennings gets one back in injury time but it's too little, too late as the Blues reclaim the bragging rights.

Wrexham 3 Chester 0 - 19/03/2016 - Attendance: 6,459 (930 Chester)
It's a day to remember for Wrexham this time as they net three times in 20 second half minutes after Chester centre-back Ryan Astles is sent off, conceding a penalty in the process which Connor Jennings calmly tucks it away. Kayden Jackson and Robbie Evans both score to extend Wrexham's unbeaten run to nine games.

Wrexham 0 Chester 0 - 24/09/2016 - Attendance: 5,058 (550 Chester)
Gary Mills' Reds can't fine a way past Chester, who keep their fourth consecutive clean sheet. Having signed for Wrexham, Rooney is fortunate not be sent off against his old club on the stroke of half-time. The full-time whistle is met with boos from the home fans.

Chester 1 Wrexham 1 - 21/01/2017 - Attendance: 3,961 (1,160 Wrexham)
Chester fight back in front of almost 4000 as Rooney returns to haunt his former employers, scoring in the 53rd minute but James Alabi keeps his nerve from the penalty spot to equalise six minutes later. The Blues finish the derby with ten men after Luke George is sent off late on for a second yellow card as they maintain their record of having never lost at home to Wrexham since reforming in 2010.
