Burns Looks To Light Up Darlington After Signing For Quakers

Jonny Burn says joining ‘big team’ Darlington feels like a homecoming and hopes the club can push for promotion to the National League and beyond.

The 22-year-old was born in Darlington and made his name in the Middlesbrough academy, where he most notably captained their Under 21 side and he says coming to the Quakers was a great chance to show what he can do.

He told the club’s official website: “I’ve been speaking to Tommy [Wright] for a while now and when he gave me the opportunity to come and play for Darlington I couldn’t turn it down really.

“It’s an opportunity to play football week in week out and hopefully get my name out there and do well for the club.”

A defender, Burn joins from Bristol Rovers, having previously had spells at Oldham, Kilmarnock and most recently, York City and manager Tommy Wright thinks the player adds experience as well as ability to his squad.

He said: “Jonny is a really good addition to our squad. He’s powerful, really good in the air and ticks a lot of boxes.

“He’s got experience of the Scottish Premier League and Football League, and he’s also a Darlington lad which means a lot.

“He comes to us in the belief we can get him back to where he wants to be, and also help us progress as a club.”

Darlington have high hopes for the coming season and Burn believes the club are rightfully aiming for a return to the Football League in the future.

“That’s why I’m here,” he said. “Hopefully I can get Darlington back to where they belong, they don’t belong in this league everyone knows that.

“The supporters are great, I’ve been a fan since I was young boy. They’re a great team, a big team. We need to get back into the Football League.”
