Bentley Buoyed By First Game In The Fylde Hot-Seat

Jim Bentley didn’t even get a training session with his AFC Fylde players before taking the team for the first time.

But the Coasters new manager says they have already showed him there’s a lot to look forward to.

Bentley was confirmed as Dave Challinor’s replacement on Monday and his first task was to try and earn three points at Maidenhead United.

In the end they had to be satisfied with a 1-1 draw as they came from behind to take a point thanks to Neill Byrne’s 73rd minute header.

“It’s been a difficult couple of days, it’s been a bit of a whirlwind really,” the new manager told us.

“I have only been in the job a day and it’s a long trip down south so we asked the players to go out and enjoy themselves, work hard and be competitive.

“We have had no time to work on anything together. We discussed things through diagrams really.

“There were some good signs, some indifferent signs and there are areas for improvement.”

He added: “But the players gave me their all and I’m proud of them for that. They battled, put their foot in and created numerous opportunities.

“Sometimes in football you have to take what you are given and that’s three unbeaten.

“We could have won it, maybe should have won it, but you take a point and you move on.

“I’ve already noticed that they’re a really together group, and they want to learn and they want to work hard. Now we have a home game against Dover to look forward to on Saturday.”
