Wrexham Complete Cross-Border `Double` Over Chester

By Steve Whitney

Wrexham earned a double Sunday boost as they enhanced their chances of promotion from the Vanarama National League and gained local bragging rights after winning the cross-border derby against Chester FC at the Racecourse Ground.

BT Sport`s Sunday`s lunchtime offering was a little slow to get going, but in front of a terrific crowd of 6,511, they triumphed in the end to win 2-0 and move within a point of third-placed Tranmere Rovers and increase the visitors` relegation fears.

The first half was a scrappy affair with neither side looking like scoring, with Chester boss Marcus Bignot the happier of the two managers going into the break.

The game burst into life just after the hour-mark with Wrexham breaking the deadlock with on-loan striker Scott Quigley's 7th goal in eight outings.

And just 8 minutes later, another January arrival, Nicky Deverdics, made it 2-0 with his first goal for the club.

Wrexham managed to see the rest of the game out in reasonable comfort.

Prior to the game, both sets of fans paid a great tribute to former Wrexham player Kieran Durkan, who tragically died aged 44 at the start of the month.
