What Happened This Weekend In The National League?

By Sam Elliott

It was another great day for the unexpected August trail blazers in the National League.

Woking were once again winners - as were FC Halifax Town.

The Cards had Jake Hyde to thank as he scored twice as Alan Dowson’s men won for a seventh time in eight matches.

They came from behind to win 3-2 at home to Barrow, meaning they stay top on a topsy-turvy afternoon around the grounds.

FC Halifax have also had a great start despite their challenging summer.

A 2-1 win over Solihull Moors meant a third win in a row - and it’s now three defeats on the bounce for Tim Flowers’ team.

Liam McAlinden was at the double as Pete Wild’s fine exceptional month in charge ends in fine fashion.

Bromley, though, did drop points - it ended 2-2 at home to AFC Fylde, the promotion chasing hosts needing a penalty from Frankie Raymond to grab a point.

Maidenhead United couldn’t win a game last August - their 3-0 win at Sutton United was their fourth already this time around.

Dover Athletic also had a dreadful start a year ago but 12 months on they are unrecognisable under Andy Hessenthaler.

Two goals from Inih Effiong secured a superb win at Harrogate Town.

Stockport County are in fine form - and they enjoyed their best result since returning to the National League.

Jim Gannon’s team won 2-1 at Wrexham, Ash Palmer and Sam Minihan’s goals at the Racecourse kept the feel-good factor going.

Hartlepool United are on the upward curve too - they won 2-1 at Torquay United as Peter Kioso snatched a winner ten minutes from time.

Boreham Wood ended their bad run with a 3-1 win over Chorley in the live BT Sport match.

Tyrone Marsh opened the scoring to give Luke Garrard's team a dream start. Defender David Stephens made it 2-0 before a own goal confirmed the points.

Chris Holroyd's goal was of little consolation for the home side, who still have yet to win since promotion was earned.

Yeovil Town and Notts County were both League Two sides last year of course.

The two clubs are getting to grips with the National League but the Glovers ran out worthy 3-1 winners.

Courtney Duffus, Myles Hippolyte and Luke Wilkinson were the men with the goals for Darren Sarll’s side at Huish Park.

Chesterfield still can’t find that first win of the season but at least they showed their battling qualities at home to Dagenham.

Mike Fondop made it 1-1 after Peter Taylor’s team took the lead through Joan Luque.

Barnet secured a brilliant late win at Eastleigh, Jack Taylor was the right man in the right place to take all the points back to north London.

Ebbsfleet United got their first win on Monday but were unable to build on their improvement as Aldershot left Stonebridge Road with a 2-1 win. Ethan Chislett and AJ Eyoma did the damage - a result which gives Danny Searle a big boost.

Saturday’s National League results:
Bromley 2-2 AFC Fylde
Chesterfield 1-1 Dagenham
Chorley 1-3 Boreham Wood
Eastleigh 1-2 Barnet
