Watson Knows Many Will Fancy National League North Tilt

Southport manager Liam Watson knows there may be “no Salford City” in the National League North next season.

But he is well aware there’s going to be a big battle to be crowned the division’s winners next season.

The Port’s excellent pre-season has seen encouragement heighten ahead of the new campaign.

On Tuesday night they drew 1-1 with League One Accrington Stanley. That followed Saturday’s excellent 3-0 win over Barrow.

Watson returns to AFC Telford United on the opening day of the season and he doesn’t expect to make any more new signings.

“We look fit, especially going into the latter stages of games,” Watson said to the club’s audio service. “It’s a tough league which many will think they can win.

“If you get two points a game you are going to be there or thereabouts next season. We do have attacking options which is really encouraging.

“There’d always work to do leading up to the first day of the season. They have worked hard. They’ve all done days on the track and time in the sand dunes.

“It’s not just Telford, it’s three tough games bang bang bang - all the squad will be used.

“That’s it now, the squad’s in place. We’ve got great competition for places now and everyone is fighting for their spot.”
