Vital Win For O`s - Dragons Held On Tyneside

By Steve Whitney

Wrexham were held to a goalless draw by mid-table Gateshead at the International Stadium in the Vanarama National League.

The Tynesiders, looking to back up last Saturday`s win over Maidstone United, couldn`t find a way past a solid visiting side, who stretched their unbeaten run in the league to seven matches.

After a bright start by Wrexham, an injury to the lively Scott Quigley on the half-hour mark dented their attacking threat.

There were still chances at either end, with the visitors` Chris Holroyd twice going close and both he and Shaun Pearson both hit the woodwork, while Paddy McLaughlin saw an effort saved by Chris Dunn at the other end.

But it was ultimately a frustrating evening on the banks of the River Tyne.

The evening`s other game was the re-arranged affair between FC Halifax Town and Leyton Orient – two teams battling to avoid dropping closer towards the drop zone.

And it was the O’s who recorded their first league win of 2018 as the visitors ran out 2-1 winners at The Shay.

The hosts, who were beaten 3-0 at Bromley last weekend, were just beginning the get into the game when Orient took the lead in the 18th minute when a good ball from Dan Holman set up Macauley Bonne for his 17th goal of the season.

The Shaymen equalised on 32 minutes when big striker Tom Denton found space in the box to smash home from close range after a low cross was not dealt with by the O`s defence.

Just after loanee Holman saw a chance go over the bar from close range, the O’s added a second in the 38th minute through Josh Koroma, who shook off his man on the edge of the area before firing a low shot past Sam Johnson.

The home side should have had a second just before the break when Denton missed the chance to tap the ball in at the back post after Shaun Tuton found him free inside the box.

The O`s held firm in a goalless second period to record their first win of the year and first in five league games.
