Vanarama's National League North fan preview: Spennymoor Town

Spennymoor Town super fan Dan Newell knows the score and he's letting us in on his outlook for the new campaign.

League sponsors Vanarama have been getting the fans’ perspective ahead of the new season - which kicks off this Saturday

What is something you want to see from your side this season?
I think the momentum to continue from last season. The attacking players we’ve signed will be something else to watch.

You’ve gone very close to promotion the last couple of seasons. What has to change this season to take that extra step?
I think consistency. The start of last season was very tough, and we struggled in the first four or five games until we went to Boston and won 2-0. That seemed to kickstart us and if it wasn’t for a poor March, we’d have been right in the mix come the last couple of games.

Which signings have stood out for you so far?
Reece Greenwood and Dan Ward. Both have looked outstanding in pre-season games but it’s whether they can carry that into the start of the season. I don’t think we’ve done any bad business in the close season.

What’s changed since this time last season?
I think the lessons learnt. It’s our third year in the league now and we’re not an unknown quantity anymore. Teams know what we’re about but with the players we’ve brought in, we’ll have a plan ‘b’ now - maybe something we haven’t had in the past.

Who is someone who can put on a show for the fans?
Reece Greenwood. If he performs like people know he can, I’ll be surprised if he’s still with us come Christmas.

Who will be in the running for promotion?
York have strengthened well and have a healthy budget. Gateshead could be the surprise package then you’ll have the same old teams that are always up there; Kidderminster Harriers, AFC Telford and Hereford are having a go.

Which away days are already marked in the diary?
I always enjoy our trips to Southport but I’m looking forward to visiting the new grounds of the promoted clubs.

Which games are you desperate to take all the spoils from?
All of them. But if I had to pick one then it would probably be Darlington at the Brewery Field. We haven’t beaten them at home yet so that would be nice.

Name an opposition player who you wish would sign for you.
Steven Thompson. He’s tore us apart in the past and still has plenty left in his legs.

Where will you be at the end of the season?
I think it will be a disappointment if we don’t go one better than last season. I think we’ll be up there so why can’t we win the league? If not, we’ll go up via the play-offs.
