There's Three Weeks To Go! Saturday's Friendly Action

By Sam Elliott

There’s now only three weeks to go! But how are the clubs shaping up as time ticks down? We set Tom Scott on the look out with August 4 creeping towards us.

Aldershot Town ran riot at Leatherhead – scoring three of their four goals in the first quarter of an hour. Gary Waddock named a number of trialists in his side, but Shamir Fenlon bagged a brace, Matt McClure also got on the scoresheet – with a trialist also scoring.

Solihull Moors were too good for Evesham under the baking sun at the Jubilee Staidum. Tim Flowers named a strong team and it took all of six minutes to take the lead, courtesy of a Jermain Hylton penalty.

A 25-yard rocket from Jamey Osbourne just before half-time stole the show for Moors. Kwame Thomas struck another penalty – Reiss McNally and Callum Coyle added to Moors’ tally late on.

Kidderminster fielded a number of new signings against Aston Villa – who put out a handful of their first team contingent.

Harriers took the lead inside 10 minutes through Fraser Horsfall. The lead didn’t last long when
Jack Grealish played in youngster Harvey Knibbs to level. Both sides continued to threaten but the game finished a goal apiece.

Hampton & Richmond played out a victory against an Oxford United side who took an early lead. The home side levelled midway into the first half through Zack Joseph.

It was level until the hour mark when Chris Dickson headed the Beavers in front – leaving Gary McCann’s men celebrating victory at the final whistle.

Chippenham Town won with a single goal against League Two Newport County. Jack Compton scored the only goal of the game on his debut for the Bluebirds.

A second half goal from Mekhi McLeod wasn’t enough to save FC Halifax from defeat at home to Bolton Wanderers – with Jamie Fullarton’s side featuring a number of trialists.

Concord Rangers are a side making noises through pre-season. Sammy Moore’s side claimed a good victory of Colchester United – with the Beach Boys going three up before the U’s scored a consolation goal.

Sam Blackman, Danny Green and Lee Minshull all bagged for Rangers – but the home side squandered a hatful of chances to further improve their tally.

Ebbsfleet United were in Portugal and recorded a 4-2 win over FC Ferreiras. Myles Weston scored a brace before Danny Kedwell and Chris Bush added more in the Algarve.

Matthew Bates will have been proud of his resilient Hartlepool United side who looked to steal a remarkable victory against Sunderland at Victoria Park.

Niko Muir scored for the Pools in the 19th minute. The home side then continued to press but to no avail. Sunderland pushed late on and were rewarded for their persistence when substitute Ben Kimpioka scored in the final seconds.

Sutton United and Woking played out a forgettable goalless draw in a game that featured very few chances and many substitutions.

Boreham Wood’s much publicised friendly with Arsenal turned into a nightmare for Luke Garrard’s men. Unai Emery was in the dugout for his first game as Gunners manager.

He named a strong side and the quality showed as Arsenal scored eight without reply – including an Aubamayang hat-trick in the first 17 minutes.

Chester
overcame local side Runcorn Linnets – but not without some sloppiness that saw the home side score three times.

Joint manager Anthony Johnson called for his side to stamp out the mistakes and admitted there was work to do for his side. Steve Howson and John Pritchard scored for Chester – with a brace courtesy of a trialist and an own goal making up the rest.

A number of Tommy Wright’s men impressed as a spirited Nuneaton Borough overcame a number of off-the-field challenges to stage their friendly against Coventry City – but the Borough couldn’t prevent the Sky Blues winning by a single goal.

St Albans City scored two first half goals without reply against Hendon – Ronan Michael-Percil and Ralston Gabriel with the goals for City. The hosts completed the goal scoring with a consolation right at the death but couldn’t muster a leveller.

Ashton United were blown away by last season’s National League champions Macclesfield Town. Mark Yates’ men were four to the good at half-time which prompted many changes from the visitors.

The second half wasn’t as clear cut despite the Silkmen improving their tally. The hosts got a single goal back late on through one of their trialists.

Steve King’s Welling United put on a good show for the home crowd against Charlton Athletic. Both sides scored inside the first 10 minutes – with the Wings’ goal coming through Adam Coombes before the Addicks levelled shortly after.

Charlton went ahead on 14 minutes to complete the games goal scoring despite many chances coming for both sides in the game.

Hamza Bencherif’s goal gave York City a victory over Bradford City. Martin Gray’s side took the lead just after an hour – a huge improvement on the 7-1 thrashing they had dealt by Barnsley last week.

Stockport County were on their travels in the Peak District – they overcame Buxton with a single goal from Thomas in the dying embers.

Fulham sent a young side to the Hive to face John Still’s Barnet. The Bees won courtesy of
Fulham own-goal when Rob Atkinson’s back pass found it’s way into the back of the net. It was an otherwise dull pre-season match.

Peter Beadle’s Hereford scored twice early through Lance Smith and Mike Symons as the Bulls looked to open the floodgates at Sporting Khalsa.

The home side grabbed a goal back before half-time to give themselves hope. That hope was cancelled out by a third goal for the away side courtesy of Harry White late on.
