Team Of The Weekend: The National League

By Sam Elliott

Eventful, irresistible and astonishing. That is just some of the descriptions of the games and the goals in the National League on Saturday.

It’s fair to say it’s not been an easy tasking selecting the Team of the Weekend.

We’ve been inundated with suggestions and at one point we have seven defenders and six midfielders to squeeze in!

As always, we rely on reporters, managers and club officials to help us put together a starting XI and five subs to make sure we honour the right players.

It may not have been easy, but here’s what we’ve come up with after some sensational games on Saturday afternoon.

As always, we ask you to join the debate - message us on twitter @TheNationalLge to make your voice heard!

Your National League Team of the Weekend:

Goalkeeper: Jay Lynch (AFC Fylde)
Don’t be fooled into thinking it was just the Coasters attackers who played their part in pulling Macclesfield to pieces. Lynch was on top form in the net.

Defender: Louis John (Sutton United)
Played wing-back and enjoyed his afternoon as Sutton upped the pressure on the league leaders.

Defender: Femi Ilesanmi (Dover Athletic)
Another appearance in the Team of the Weekend, he returned to Boreham Wood and scored a vital goal as Chris Kinnear’s side clinched a big result.

Defender: Liam Daly (Solihull Moors)
Can they really pull off the great escape? Moors have a good chance - Liam Daly has been sensational since Mark Yates came to the club.

Defender: Ayo Obileye (Eastleigh)
Scored twice and walks into the side as Eastleigh won at Maidstone United to keep their great run going.

Midfielder: Adam Mekki (Bromley)
Bromley’s 4-0 win at Torquay has sparked play-off talk at Hayes Lane - Mekki’s is on form, and so are his club.

Midfielder: Sam Finley (AFC Fylde)
Two goals and a genuine 9/10 performance against leaders leaders Macclesfield. He takes the arm-band this week!

Midfielder: Paddy McLaughlin (Gateshead)

Gateshead really needed their win at Chester and the Northern Irish midfielder was outstanding for Steve Watson.

Midfielder: Harry Beautyman (Sutton United)
Excellent footballer and Paul Doswell will knows his signature could have a big impact on the National League title race. A class act.

Striker: Jermaine Hylton (Solihull Moors)
Two goals against Woking and a fine performance. They will need this to be just the start as Moors look to escape the bottom four.

Striker: Scott Quigley (Wrexham)
Not a bad way to start your Wrexham career. Could this be the biggest signing of the January transfer window?

Substitutes:
Dave Winfield (Ebbsfleet)
Ben Fox (Gateshead)
Jack Muldoon (AFC Fylde)
Louis Dennis (Bromley)
Tommy Wright (Sutton United)
