Saturday's Vanarama National League Round-Up....

By Steve Whitney

Dover Athletic top the Vanarama National League table following Saturday`s round of results which saw them edge out struggling Solihull Moors at Crabble, while previous leaders Sutton United could only draw at Wrexham.

Solihull travelled south to the Kent coast with only two wins from their dozen games, but proved a tough nut to crack for Chris Kinnear`s side.

And they looked to be heading for a valuable point until Ryan Bird headed in a Paul Lewis cross with just 9 minutes remaining to send the Whites back to the top of the table.

Sutton looked to be heading for defeat at the Racecourse Ground against in-form Wrexham.

Marcus Kelly had scored for the home side after 18 minutes following a pull back from Chris Holroyd.

But Ross Lafayette produced a stunning strike in the first minutes of stoppage time at the end of the match to deny Wrexham all three points.

Dagenham & Redbridge are now second after a hard-fought 1-0 win at Victoria Road against bottom-of-the-table Torquay United.

And, like Sutton, the Daggers left it very, very late.

A determined performance under new boss Gary Owers looked to have earned Torquay a vital away point.

But, in the first minute of time added on at the end of the game, Sean McGinty was penalised for holding at a corner and the referee awarded the Daggers a penalty which sub Fejiri Okenabirhie tucked past Vincent Dorel to win the game.

Macclesfield Town leap-frogged Aldershot Town into fourth spot after beating The Shots 2-0 at the Moss Rose.

Scott Wilson’s goal after just 20 seconds gave the Silkmen the perfect start, but The Shots dominated for large periods of the first half.

Nonetheless, Elliott Durrell bent a shot into the corner of the net on 58 minutes to seal the points as the visitors ended the game with ten-men, after Manny Oyeleke limped off in the closing stages after all three subs had already been used.

Maidstone United are fifth after inflicting a disappointing 1-0 defeat on Micky Moore`s Barrow AFC side at the Furness Building Society Stadium.

Joe Pigott’s second half penalty eventually separated the sides

United stood up impressively to the hosts, ending their unbeaten home record, and had chances to win by more.

One goal did the job, though, with Jay Saunders’ side winning the game when Johan Ter Horst was brought down by home `keeper Joel Dixon as he broke into the box and Pigott duly converted the only goal from the spot.

Woking and Hartlepool United shared a 1-1 draw at the Laithwaite Community Stadium.

The hosts went behind in the 26th minute, thanks to Ryan Donaldson's header, but equalised on the stroke of half-time through Jamie Philpot.

The Cards very nearly won it at the end when sub Inih Effiong struck the frame of the goal.

Leyton Orient suffered a disappointing 2-1 defeat at the Matchroom Stadium on new boys AFC Fylde`s first ever visit to E10.

Danny Rowe’s 15th minute free-kick had given the visitors the lead going into the break, and following the restart, the prolific Rowe popped up with his second from 30 yards.

Jobi McAnuff pulled one back with 17 minutes remaining, but the O’s were unable to salvage a point, despite considerable late pressure and the Coasters` loss of Lewis Montrose to a second yellow card in the final minute.

FC Halifax Town dropped out of the play-off places after they lost 2-0 at Stonebridge Road to an Ebbsfleet United side for whom this was only a third win in thirteen games, although Darryl McMahon`s side have only lost once.

After an even first half, Sean Shields, who came off the bench 5 minutes before the break, broke the deadlock 2 minutes into the second half.

And it proved to be an inspired substitution as it was Shields who added the second to seal victory 19 minutes from time.

Relief for Micky Mellon as his Tranmere Rovers side ended a run of three games without a win with a 1-0 success at Hayes Lane against Bromley.

But this was another National League game that went right to the wire as it wasn`t until 3 minutes into stoppage time at the end of the game that James Norwood finally broke the deadlock with a low shot from a narrow angle past David Gregory in the home goal to win the game for Rovers.

Maidenhead United secured a good 3-0 York Road win over struggling Guiseley AFC.

The damage was done in the opening 35 minutes as the Magpies race into a three-goal lead.

It began as early as the 3rd minute when a long throw from Sam Barratt was flicked on by Jake Goodman and Ryan Upward pounced after Guiseley `keeper Joe Green had spilled the ball.

And less than 2 minutes later it was 2-0 when a ball from James Comley found Harry Pritchard who curled a beauty past Green from 20 yards.

Maidenhead had more chances to increase their lead before the did so on 35 minutes when Comley outpaced Ash Palmer and neatly chipped Green for his first goal for the club.

Five minutes before the break, Adrian Clifton headed against the post and, although the second half was a little less intense, the Magpies had opportunities to add to their lead in a very good all-round performace from Alan Devonshire`s side.

Gateshead were held to a 1-1 draw by Boreham Wood at the International Stadium.

A goal on the half-hour mark by Wes York was finally cancelled out in the 87th minute by Ricky Shakes to earn the visitors a point.

However, the Heed missed a host of chances to secure all three points.

The game between Eastleigh and Chester FC was postponed by the match referee close to kick-off due to a waterlogged pitch.
