Saturday`s Vanarama National League Review....

Cheltenham Town lost for only the fourth time this season in the Vanarama National League...

...at the Avanti Stadium against play-off chasing Braintree Town on Saturday. However, second-placed Forest Green Rovers weren`t able to take full advantage as they were held to a 1-1 draw at another top five contender, Tranmere Rovers.
In front of a crowd of 1,138 – Braintree`s second highest of the season so far in the league – the Iron became only the fourth side to take three points off Cheltenham this season.
It was Michael Cheek’s headed goal in the 63rd minute that proved the decisive blow.
But just as important was that it was Danny Cowley`s side`s twentieth clean sheet of the campaign to date.
Forest Green's hopes of reaching the top of the table were dashed in Birkenhead as they had a man sent-off and were held by Tranmere in a feisty encounter at Prenton Park.
The visitors lead through Darren Carter in the 5th minute, but Jay Harris pulled Gary Brabin's men level 3 minutes into the second half before Carter was sent-off on the hour-mark after bringing down Jay Harris, picking up a second yellow
Tranmere laid siege for the final half-an-hour but could not find a winner as Forest Green held firm for what could prove to be a crucial point.
Dover Athletic are fourth after a 1-0 win at Nethermoor against a Guiseley AFC outfit who are just four points off the relegation zone.
What turned out to be the only goal of the game came as early as the 6th minute when, following a corner, Stef Payne fired past Rob Atkinson from 20 yards.
The hosts had their chances to get back into the game, most notably through Olly Norburn, Danny Boshell and James Hurst.
Richard Orlu came close to doubling the Whites` lead, but the game was all-but over for the Lions 15 minutes from time when they were reduced to ten-men when Hurst was shown a straight red card for a bad challenge on Jack Parkinson.
Even with ten-men though, Guiseley managed to go close through Will Hatfield and Norburn again before the final whistle went.
Wrexham moved into seventh place, three behind the top five, after avenging their defeat to neighbours Chester FC back in October with a convincing 3-0 win second cross-border derby at the Racecourse Ground.
In front of a crowd of 6,459, Wrexham extended their recent good run to nine matches, although it took the dismissal of Chester`s Ryan Astles for the breakthrough to arrive in the 63rd minute.
Connor Jennings converted the resulting penalty after Astles had brought down Kayden Jackson.
It was Jackson who doubled the Dragons` lead after 77 minutes when he fired home from just outside the box after Jennings` corner had only been half-cleared.
Robbie Evans slammed home the third with 84 minutes gone on the clock to round off a good win for the hosts.
Lincoln City`s play-off hopes took a huge blow as they were beaten on their own Sincil Bank turf by bottom-markers Kidderminster Harriers, who are still on the lookout for a miracle to avoid the drop.
Harriers trailed to Jack Muldoon's 27th minute effort.
But James McQuilkin, on as a half-time substitute, equalised in the 72nd minute with a free-kick from the edge of the box.
And then 11 minutes later McQuilkin headed in a Ben Whitfield cross to earn only Harriers` sixth three-point haul of the campaign to date.
However, their chances of escaping relegation are still slim, being eleven points behind fifth-bottom Altrincham, who also possess a game in hand.
Second-bottom Welling United are similarly looking doomed after going down to a 1-0 defeat at Park View Road against a Gateshead side who are now only three points behind fifth-placed Braintree.
The visitors only had a handful of chances themselves but in the end, one was all they needed.
What proved to be the only goal of the game came on the stroke of half-time when a free-kick on the edge of the box fell kindly for Alex Whitmore, who headed in at the far post.
Welling should have levelled in the second half when Michael Bakare went clean through but keeper Sam Russell made a smart save with his legs as the striker's finish lacked conviction.
Boreham Wood held on at Meadow Park against mid-table Macclesfield Town to earn a point that leaves them a point behind the safety-mark.
The match ended goalless, but it was the visiting Silkmen who bossed possession and had the better of the few clear-cut chances in the game.
That point wasn`t enough to keep Wood out of dropping back into the bottom four though after Altrincham`s 4-0 drubbing of Aldershot Town at Moss Lane.
Aldershot started the game quite brightly but then Altrincham improved and deservedly took a 32nd minute lead. Following a Jordan Sinnott throw from the right, James Lawrie lashed a low, left-footed ball into the box where Damian Reeves turned it into the net from close range.
The hosts doubled their lead 90 seconds into the second half when Josh Ginnelly scored a superb goal. The on-loan Burnley man ran more than fifty yards up the left before slotting a low shot across goalkeeper Phil Smith and into the net.
The game was over for Aldershot when they conceded a penalty on the hour-mark. Lawrie was blatantly pushed over by Omar Beckles as a Sinnott cross sailed over the head of everyone in the box. Jake Moult blasted home the spot-kick to make it 3-0 after 61 minutes.
Eight minutes later Ginnelly got forward again in the 69th minute and, from his cross, Sinnott volleyed an excellent goal, his second in successive games.
Nathan Blissett's late winner against Southport saw Torquay United also move out of the relegation zone for the first time in six months.
The striker, whose absence over the past three matches coincided with the Gulls failing to score in those games, scored from close range with 10 minutes remaining at the Launa Windows Stadium.
Managerless Southport, being led by Andy Bishop, deserved at least a point as Louis Almond and Josh Thompson went close before Blissett's winner.
Substitute Jason Walker snatched a point for Barrow AFC with a late equaliser against fellow mid-table outfit Bromley at the Furness Building Society Stadium.
Eight minutes from time, Walker followed up a saved penalty to put the ball away and take victory away from visitors who had several chances to go more than one goal up.
The visitors took the lead after 57 minutes when Moses Emmanuel laid the ball off to Adam Cunnington on the edge of the area. He controlled well, took the ball down and fired into the top corner.
The goal sparked the home team into life. Ben Tomlinson fired over before Jordan Williams hit a fine 25-yard effort which took a slight deflection and flew just wide of the left-hand post.
But Barrow equalised came when Walker was climbed all over by Jack Holland for a blatant penalty. Walker’s spot-kick was saved by Alan Julian, but Walker followed up and bundled the ball over the line.
