Saturday`s Round-Up: Vanarama National League South

By Steve Whitney

There are three teams level on twenty-eight points at the top of the table following Saturday`s return to a full league programme.

Braintree Town head the trio on goal difference, with Chelmsford City second and St Albans City third.

The Iron were held to a 1-1 draw at Twerton Park by mid-table Bath City.

Bath broke the deadlock with 11 minutes to go when a deflected George Rigg effort sailed in.

But the visitors hauled themselves level through Karl Oliyide just 6 minutes later.

And as Braintree finished on top, Rigg was sent-off for a second yellow card offence.

Chelmsford were the only one of the three leaders to win on the day – and that after being down to ten-men with 71 minutes left to play!

City welcomed a Dartford side who were fourth at the start of play at the Melbourne Stadium.

The home side started well and took a 15th minute lead through Michael West.

But when the Clarets had Kudus Oyenuga dismissed for an alleged elbow incident on Dartford`s Tom Bonner in the 19th minute, they really looked in for a tough afternoon.

But they produced one of their best performances of the season and managed to hold on to that early lead.

It was a frustrating afternoon for St Albans, who were held to a goalless draw by mid-table Hungerford Town at Clarence Park.

The Saints had chances to win the game but just could not get the ball in the net.

Truro City dropped to fourth after suffering a 2-1 defeat at Grosvenor Vale against Wealdstone, who are now tenth.

The Stones hit the White Tigers with two goals in 2 minutes, starting in the 27th minute with an Abobaker Eisa effort.

And it was Eisa again who quickly doubled the home side`s advantage.

Tyler Harvey eventually got Truro back into the game with a goal in the 81st minute, but they weren`t able to find a leveller.

Welling United are fifth after winning 1-0 at Evesham against Gloucester City.

The only goal of the game in difficult conditions came from the Wings` Joe Healy with less than 6 minutes of normal time remaining.

Hemel Hempstead Town moved up to sixth after a 2-0 Vauxhall Road victory over a now second-bottom Oxford City side.

Charlie Sheringham put the Tudors in front after 21 minutes – and that was the interval score.

Just 5 minutes into the second half Spencer McCall doubled the home side`s lead – a lead that City rarely threatened to dent.

Concord Rangers slipped above Oxford but were pegged back late on by visiting Weston-super-Mare.

The Beachboys Steve Cawley had an interesting afternoon, putting his team in front as early as the 6th minute and then doubling his and the hosts` lead 9 minutes later from the penalty spot after Ben Greenhalgh was brought down by Weston `keeper Luke Purnell.

Nine minutes into the second half, Gethyn Hill pulled one back for the Seagulls, whose hopes of getting back on level terms increased on 66 minutes when Cawley was sent-off for a lunging challenge.

The game was then held up for a while due to an incident off the pitch and then the referee dismissed Concord manager Adam Flanagan to the stand.

He was then swiftly followed by Concord's assistant-manager Glen Alzepiedi.

And then in stoppage time of an eventful second half saw Irnti Rapai pop up with Weston`s equaliser.

Whitehawk remain rooted to the bottom after going down to a 3-1 defeat at the Enclosed Ground to Hampton & Richmond Borough.

The Beavers had a great start when Christian Jolley put them in front inside the opening minute.

Bradley Hudson-Odoi then bagged a brace in the 22nd and 33rd minutes to effectively kill off the contest.

Marvin Elliott `won` the second half for the Hawks with a 62nd minute consolation.

Poole Town looked to be heading for a win at Westleigh Park against Havant & Waterlooville as they led 2-1 with less than 2 minutes remaining.

But Alfie Rutherford popped up with the Hawks` leveller to salvage a point.

Earlier, Jason Prior had given the home side a 31st minute lead that Matthew Neale cancelled out 4 minutes after the break.

Warren Bentley then gave the Dolphins a 77th minute lead which looked like being the winner until Rutherford struck.

Eastbourne Borough also produced a comeback to earn a point at Priory Lane against East Thurrock United.

The Rocks scored twice shortly before half-time through Vicente Belho and Max Cornhill.

Sergio Torres pulled Boro back into the game just shy of the hour-mark and then Lloyd Dawes grabbed a 74th minute leveller.

Bognor Regis Town dropped to fourth-bottom spot after going down to a 3-1 defeat to fellow new boys Chippenham Town at Nyewood Lane.

Loanee Scott Twine gave the Bluebirds a 39th minute lead that David Pratt added to 4 minutes into the second half.

Mike Jones added a third to virtually seal the points 4 minutes later, with the Rocks nabbing an 85th minute consolation from Ibra Sekajja.
