Saturday Round Up: Vanarama National League North

By Steve Whitney

Harrogate Town top the Vanarama National League North table on goal difference after triumphing in the derby against York City at the CNG Stadium on Saturday.

In front of a crowd of 2,800, the Minstermen were a goal down in the 15th minute after `keeper Jon Worsnop brought down Jordan Thewlis and Joe Leesley converted the penalty.

Their task became even more difficult early in the second half, Liam Agnew's effort taking a big deflection past Worsnop.

Visiting skipper Sean Newton later struck a post but a recovery never appeared likely.

Salford City are level on points with Harrogate but were given a tough test by third-bottom Gainsborough Trinity at the Northolme.

Trinity battled really hard but in the end were undone by a goal a minute before half-time from Mike Phenix for the Ammies.

Brackley Town have also lost just once to date, but had to make do with a share of the spoils at St James`s Park against inconsistent Curzon Ashton.

The Saints led through Glenn Walker`s 26th minute strike only for Richie Baker to level after 37 minutes.

But the home side led at the break, courtesy of an Aaron Williams effort.

There looked to be no way back for the Nash when they had striker Niall Cummins sent-off with 10 minutes remaining as he was being substituted.

But a great strike from Joe Guest in stoppage time earned the ten-men a valuable point.

There were goals galore at Aggborough for the 1,524 crowd to enjoy as Kidderminster Harriers just edged visitors Blyth Spartans 5-4.

Harriers got things underway as they took the lead through Andre Brown’s neat finish after just 3 minutes, but the visitors had the game on its head, Dale Hopson and Dave McTiernan finishing to have them 2-1 up by the 20th minute.

On his home debut, James Pearson headed Harriers level 3 minutes later, before McTiernan restored Spartans` advantage with a fourth goal in 25 minutes.

But Harriers netted two swiftly after the break through Manny Sonupe from the penalty spot, before Pearson rose highest to double his own personal tally with a terrific effort to make it 4-3.

And on 78 minutes, Andre Wright turned the ball home from a corner to stretch Harriers` lead to 5-3.

Hopson pulled a fourth back for the visitors 5 minutes from time.

Chorley survived going down to ten-men with almost all of the second half to go to beat AFC Telford United 3-2 at Victory Park.

The Magpies took an 11th minute lead through Josh Wilson.

And Marcus Carver doubled their advantage with 32 minutes gone on the clock.

But a few minutes after the break, Adam Anson was sent-off for the foul inside the box and Marcus Dinanga pulled the Bucks back into the game from the resulting penalty.

Five minutes later, Dinanga equalised and the momentum was with Telford.

However, Carver grabbed Chorley`s third on 66 minutes and the ten-men held out.

Leamington earned a third win since returning to the league at the end of last season.

The Brakes edged out in-form Bradford Park Avenue 2-1 at the New Windmill Ground, coming back from being an early 7th minute James Knowles goal down to win.

Kieran Dunbar equalised on 23 minutes, and Paul Holleran`s side won it with 9 minutes to go through Ahmed Obeng.

A crowd of 3,071 saw Stockport County inflict a ninth defeat of the season to date on relegated North Ferriby United, who are already six points adrift of the safety-mark in the table.

Jason Oswell gave the Hatters the lead on the half-hour mark.

And Sam Minihan doubled that 9 minutes later, and although new boy Darnelle Bailey-King reduced the deficit for Ferriby 2 minutes after the break, Oswell`s second less than a minute later restored County`s two-goal advantage.

Scott Duxbury`s first goal of the season on 56 minutes sealed the hosts` 4-1 verdict.

Spennymoor Town put an end to Alfreton Town`s seven-game unbeaten run with a 2-1 success at the Brewery Field.

The Moors led through Shane Henry`s 25th minute strike right until the 85th minute when Joe Tait sealed the points with a second.

There was still time for a Reds consolation for Tom Allan.

Nuneaton Town sent visiting Southport to a 3-0 defeat at Liberty Way.

It was a memorable day for Boro`s Ashley Chambers, who netted a hat-trick.

His first on 31 minutes separated the teams at half-time.

He then doubled the home side`s lead after 68 minutes and won the matchball 2 minutes from time.

Kabongo Tshimanga scored a late equaliser as Boston United shared the spoils with Darlington at The Jakemans Stadium.

The Pilgrims, who saw skipper James Clifton denied from the penalty spot during the first half, fell behind when Stephen Thompson converted a spot-kick on the hour-mark.

United though levelled with 12 minutes to play through Tshimanga's sixth goal of the campaign.
