Saturday Round Up: The Vanarama National League

By Steve Whitney

Sutton United top the Vanarama National League table after edging a best-of-five encounter with Barrow AFC at Gander Green Lane on Saturday.

Micky Moore's first game in permanent charge of the visitors ended in defeat, despite a valiant display.

The U`s took a 26th minute lead when Aswad Thomas' in-swinging free-kick missed everyone and crept in as the left-back celebrated his first goal for the club.

However, on 39 minutes, Bradley Bauress was brought down in the box and Byron Harrison converted the penalty to take the sides into the break all-square.

But Barrow fell to pieces at the start of the second half. First Josh Taylor got his toe to the loose ball to force it past Joel Dixon to re-establish the lead before Moses Emmanuel made it 3-1 just 3 minutes after that.

Harrison gave Barrow hope in the 62nd minute with a close range finish, but Moore's side could not rescue a point.

Aldershot Town are second, but could have been top this evening having led Leyton Orient 2-0 at The EBB Stadium.

Cheye Alexander and Matt McClure had given the hosts a two-goal lead with goals in the 9th and 21st minute, but with 6 minutes of the first half remaining, midfielder Craig Clay pulled one back for the O`s with a header.

But with time running out, Orient managed to complete their comeback as substitute Romuald Boco calmly slotted home the equaliser in the 83rd minute.

Dover Athletic shared a 1-1 draw at Nethermoor against third-bottom Guiseley AFC.

A scrappy start on a lovely afternoon was livened up when the home side took the lead on the half-hour mark when a John Rooney free-kick was deflected past Dover `keeper Mitch Walker.

Four minutes later it was almost 2-0 as Jake Lawlor`s header from a corner was clawed away by Walker.

But 5 minutes before the break, the Whites were level when Nortei Nortey curled home a beauty past home `keeper Joe Green.

The second half was a disappointing affair and only really livened up in the final few minutes when Guiseley sub Reece Thompson almost won it for the hosts.

Ten-man FC Halifax Town produced a valiant display to beat Bromley 2-1 at The Shay.

It looked a matter of time until Town scored in the first half, before the referee controversially sent-off Scott Garner on the stroke of half-time after an aerial challenge with Brett Williams.

But Halifax belied their disadvantage by twice taking the lead, through Matty Kosylo after 54 minutes and then Tom Denton on 68 minutes, either side of George Porter’s equaliser on the hour-mark.

Wrexham also finished their game at Prenton Park with ten-men, but it`s troubled times for Micky Mellon`s Tranmere Rovers, who were beaten for a fifth time to date this season already and are languishing down in eighteenth place in the table.

Chris Holroyd's 59th minute goal gave the Dragons a fine win.

And the visitors played for 77 minutes a man down after Sam Wedgbury was dismissed for two bookings within 13 minutes.

Holroyd fired through a crowd of players from the edge of the box after a corner to shock the home crowd.

Tranmere could not break through even in 10 minutes of added time after play was suspended for a spectator to be taken from the ground on a stretcher.

Woking earned a very creditable 2-1 win at Mill Farm against newcomers AFC Fylde.

The Cards first visit to the Fylde coast didn`t start too well as the hosts took an 18th minute lead when a Henry Jones corner was guided home at the far post by Jordan Tunnicliffe.

The Coasters fully deserved their half-time lead, but just 8 minutes into the second period, Woking equalised with a bolt out of the blue from Joe Ward from 25 yards that crashed in off a post.

And less than 2 minutes later, the game was turned on its head when Jamie Philpott headed home unmarked from 8 yards out.

Prolific marksman Danny Rowe had a couple of half chances to level for the hosts, but Woking held out to take the points back to Surrey.

Dagenham & Redbridge earned a point at Solihull Moors, after Jake Howells scored in the final seconds of the match.

It only took 6 minutes for the opening goal of the game - Mason Bloomfield was at the back post to head in a goal past Moors` keeper Nathan Vaughan.

The home side then equalised 6 minutes later when a header from Darren Carter rebounded off the post and past Mark Cousins.

Oladapo Afolayan then gave the Moors the lead 5 minutes before the end of the first half, after his effort from 25 yards out went under Cousins.

Chances were few and far between in the second half, but the Daggers finally scored in the 4th minute of stoppage time at the end of the match as Jake Howells' corner curled into the back of the net.

Hartlepool United’s five-game unbeaten run came to an end as Eastleigh ran out 2-1 winners at Victoria Park.

Craig Harrison’s side dominated much of the possession but found themselves frustrated against solid opponents.

After a goalless first half, Eastleigh came out quickly after the break and pulled a great save from Scott Loach, with the big keeper getting down really well to send a Gary McSheffrey free-kick wide of target.

But Pools were not as fortunate from the resulting corner as the ball in saw a scramble inside the box and, with the hosts failing to clear, Callum Howe forced the ball home to give his side a 47th minute lead.

And Eastleigh doubled their lead 5 minutes later with a great strike from Mark Yeates, who fired a powerful half-volley through the area and into the back of the net.

Pools` reply came on 90 minutes as Jack Munns fired a low effort from just inside the area that beat Graham Stack to make it 2-1 and set up a more exciting period of 4 minutes added time.

Maidstone United were 2-0 up at the Gallagher Stadium against Gateshead, who also had the blow of being a man down early on, before battling back to earn a terrific point.

Gateshead had defender Theo Vassell sent-off for bringing down Zavon Hines in the box with only 11 minutes gone on the clock.

The decision seemed harsh, but Hines dusted himself down to convert the resulting penalty.

The Stones lost their way after that but looked on course for a fourth league win in a row when defender Alex Wynter scored number two in the 68th minute.

A defensive error gifted Richard Peniket a goal 2 minutes later and the battling Heed levelled through Danny Johnson with 10 minutes reemaining.

Chester FC ended their long wait for a home win in Marcus Bignot’s first game in charge with a 2-0 win against newly-promoted Maidenhead United.

Chester hadn’t won at home since December, but the team were obviously out to impress their new boss as they took an early 7th minute lead through Ryan Astles strike.

And Ross Hannah’s 73rd minute penalty helped the Blues to seal three points.

Ebbsfleet United completed a second win of the season to date and have still only suffered one defeat since winning their place back at the top of the non-League game after a 1-0 success at Meadow Park against inconsistent Boreham Wood.

The first half was bossed by Wood in the main, with Mark Ricketts and Keiran Murtagh especially impressive.

The hosts had a goal disallowed just past the hour-mark when new signing Dan Holman thought he had beaten Nathan Ashmore only to be denied by the assistant`s flag.

But on 76 minutes, Fleet broke and Darren McQueen was hauled down by a combination of Dean Wells and Dave Stephens and Danny Kedwell beat Grant Smith from the resulting penalty.

And although Wood had a couple of chances to equalise, Fleet held firm for three valuable points.
