Salford Delight As Goalscoring Midfielder Returns On A Permanent Basis

Salford City have announced the signing of midfielder Nick Haughton from SkyBet League One side Fleetwood Town.

The 23-year-old has signed a two-and-a-half-year contract at The Peninsula Stadium as he joins the Ammies for an undisclosed fee for his third spell with the club.

Haughton had two separate loan spells at the club during the 2016/17 season, making twenty-two appearances and scoring 3 goals in total.

Perhaps the most important of those was the winning goal at Worcester City in April 2017 which confirmed Salford’s place in the National League North play-offs.

This season Haughton has been on loan at promotion-chasing Chorley, where he has scored an impressive 13 goals in twenty-five appearances, and he hopes that he can continue that form back at Salford:

Haughton told the club`s official website: “I’ve worked on my game this year and I feel like I’ve improved at scoring goals which is one of them, and hopefully I’ll be scoring a few more to help the lads on push on for this season.

“It’s difficult but it always is, anyone can beat anyone in this league – it’s just how you turn up on the day. You’ve got to prepare right, and you never know what can happen.

“I’m really happy to be back, looking forward to joining up with the lads and helping the team go forward and push for promotion.

“There’s a lot of things that persuaded me to come back. The ambition of the club going forward; the lads are great, a few of them I know from when I was here last time - the managers, and I’m really looking forward to joining up with them!”

Coincidentally Haughton made his first debut for Salford against Harrogate Town, who the Ammies host on Saturday, and scored a memorable goal at the CNG Stadium last season.

It’s that sort of ability which joint-manager Bernard Morley says could be the final piece of the puzzle for Salford’s promotion push: “We’re delighted to be able to bring Nick back to the club, we had him last year and he did really well for us.

“On his day he’s potentially the best in his position in the league, and his consistency at Chorley this season has been fantastic, so we jumped at the chance to bring him in.

“After working with him last season we know what he’s about – he’s young, he’s professional, and he works really hard.

“When we spoke to him he said that he understands what the expectations are at the football club, that we want to be promoted, and hopefully he can be the icing on the cake”.
