Quote Us Happy! Manager’s Best One Liners So Far

By Sam Elliott

What’s the best line? That’s the question reporters ask themselves after each interview they conduct.

One quote may seem obvious to lead on, but other times it takes some thought and prodding to get those key words from the mouths of managers.

‘Same old, same old’ – I bet that’s what some of you think when reading through a post or pre-match interview.

Managers do sometimes provide us with entertainment, honest!

We’ve done some digging to find some quotes that we think are crackers.

So, with that said, let’s take a look at five of the best quotes from National League managers this season.

Richard Money – Solihull Moors

The former Solihull Moors boss gave quite an interview after losing 4-0 against AFC Fylde.

“I see people around the place looking at me as though I’ve got two heads. I’m not a magician.

“I’m now going to go home and I’m going to watch Strictly Come Dancing and I’m going to watch The X Factor.”

That was quite the way to end his tenure at the Automated Technology Group Stadium. Not only did Money go home and enjoy some Saturday night entertainment, but he also resigned from his post a few days later – just 26 days after arriving!

Micky Mellon – Tranmere Rovers

Rovers are sitting pretty in third place at present, but it’s nitty gritty victories that get you over the line.

After defeating Maidstone 3-2 at the end of last month, Mellon said: “It was a bit of a scrappy game. It won’t be one where they’re getting the DVD out for in years to come.”

Don’t worry Micky, I don’t think anyone was keen on purchasing one anyway!

Paul Doswell – Sutton United

After beating Dagenham & Redbridge to move to within three points of leaders Macclesfield Town in January, Sutton boss Paul Doswell wanted to make sure that relegation was no longer a threat.

“Just two points to be safe from relegation now,” He said as they sat 25-points clear of the drop zone.
The 51-year-old then went on to describe the National League campaign as a running event, making reference to an 800-metre run.

“It’s a marathon the season. You look at the start of March as being 800 metres. Come April, you need to be on the bend. If we can be on the starting line in March, with eight or nine others, then that’s a fantastic position for us to be in.”

Marcus Bignot – Chester

Marcus Bignot has quite the job on his hands at Chester, with problems off-the-field playing a part in their performances on it.

Speaking at the start of January, Bignot said: “If we remain in this league then it will be a free-for-all round my house.”

We’ll take you up on that then shall we, Marcus?

Kevin Nicholson – Torquay United

The 37-year-old didn’t last long at relegation threatened Torquay this season, departing the club in August.

Could this quote have had something to do with his departure? Have a look at what he likened his teams defending against Boreham Wood to.

“It would be offensive to schoolboys to call it schoolboy defending.”

A win for all the schoolboys out there?
