Premier League International Cup At Aldershot

Aldershot Town welcome some of Europe’s best young players next week as Dinamo Zagreb face VfL Wolfsburg at the EBB Stadium on Wednesday, 29th November.

The Group D tie in the Premier League International Cup – a competition featuring the Academies of 12 English teams and 12 elite sides from across Europe – sees Croatia’s most successful club play German’s VfL Wolfsburg, who won the Bundesliga title in 2008-09 and the German Cup in 2015.

The Zagreb teams is likely to feature an array of Croatian youth internationals who may follow in the exalted footsteps of previous Dinamo academy graduates such as Luka Modric, Zvonimir Boban, Robert Prosinecki, Dario Simic and Vedran Corluka. Recent Wolfsburg Academy graduates include German internationals Julian Brandt and Maximilian Arnold, plus Turkey international Tolga Cigerci.

Wolfsburg currently top Group D, having beaten Everton last month in a section which also includes Derby County. The International Cup, now in its fourth season, consists of six groups of four teams, with six group winners and the two best runners-up qualifying for the quarter-finals.

The 24 teams in the 2017-18 competition are: Sparta Prague, Liverpool, Newcastle United, PSV Eindhoven (Group A); Hertha Berlin, Legia Warsaw, Leicester City, Sunderland (Group B); Derby County, GNK Dinamo Zagreb, Everton, VfL Wolfsburg (Group C); Athletic Club Bilbao, Celtic FC, Manchester United, Swansea City (Group D); Arsenal, FC Bayern Munich, FC Porto, Reading (Group E); and SL Benfica, Tottenham Hotspur, Villarreal CF, West Ham United (Group F).
