Owers Says It Was A Bad Day All Round For Gulls

Torquay United boss Gary Owers says his side kept going but to end with nine men and lose made it bad day for the Gulls.

They are now seven points from safety with five games to go after a 1-0 loss at Dover Athletic, writes Tom Feaheny.

With Elliott Romain and Rhys Healey both sent off, it was a day to forget for them.

“We’ve lost the game, we’ve finished with 9 men, we’ve got a game on Tuesday. The lads that are playing at the end are doing more work than they need to because they have to work for two players that have been sent off," Owers told the club's website.

"Two very influential players that have scored goals for us and they will be sat in the stands.

“I’m going to stick up for the lads today. I thought they had a go against a team that have done well this season, a really strong physical team."

Owers says that elements of that performance even with nine men can be used for the next match.

"I thought they carried the fight up until the final whistle. The latter stages of the game we should’ve scored an equaliser.

“We have to turn up on Tuesday and try and win the game.”
