On This Day: National League Action From December 8, 2012

By Steven Coney

As we prepare for another action-packed weekend of National League action, we’ve decided to take a look back at years gone by.

We’ve flicked through the archives to find the last full programme of fixtures on December 8 and it makes for some interesting reading.

The big news of the day, back in 2012, was leaders Newport County being knocked off the top of the league by Kidderminster Harriers.

Michael Smith and Lee Evans had put the Exiles ahead but a Jamille Matt hat-trick won it for Harriers at Aggborough.

That result allowed Grimsby Town to go top of the pile after they beat Tamworth 2-0 at Blundell Park thanks to goals from captain Craig Disley and Ross Hannah.

Wrexham moved up to second with a 6-1 win at home against Nuneaton Town, who dropped to the bottom of the table. Johnny Hunt, Andy Morrell, Neil Ashton (2), Rob Ogleby and Adrian Cieslewicz were all on target for the Dragons.

Luton Town climbed into the play-off positions, meanwhile, with a comfortable 3-0 victory against Alfreton Town at Kenilworth Road.

Braintree Town gave their survival hopes a boost with victory at fellow strugglers Southport whilst Stockport County and AFC Telford United both fell closer towards the bottom four with defeats at Woking and Hyde respectively.
