Newton Becomes Eighth New Pools Signing

Hartlepool United have beaten off competition from a number of other clubs to make highly-rated midfielder Conor Newton their eighth signing of the summer.

The 25-year-old was at Victoria Park this afternoon to complete the paperwork on his switch following his release from Sky Bet League Two side Cambridge United at the end of last season.

North-East born Newton began his career with Newcastle United where he was on the books from the age of nine and went on to make a debut in their reserves in 2008.

The box-to-box midfielder gained solid senior experience from a season-and-a-half on loan with Scottish outfit St Mirren for whom he scored in their League Cup final triumph over Hearts in March 2013.

Following his release from The Magpies, Newton opted to make a move to Rotherham United and he spent a year with The Millers before joining Cambridge in July 2015.

He made thirty-two appearances for the U’s last term and had been linked with several clubs both north and south of the border, but new Pools boss Craig Harrison has now persuaded him his future lies at the Victoria Ground.
