Moors The Merrier! Boss Yates Toasts Their Great Escape

Mark Yates says saving Solihull Moors from National League relegation is one of the best achievements of his managerial career.

The Moors’ 2-1 win at Tranmere Rovers on Tuesday night confirmed their place in Non-League’s top tier for next season.

It’s been a remarkable turnaround since Yates took charge in November. Looking dead and buried, the ex-Kidderminster and Cheltenham boss transformed the squad and results soon followed.

They are unbeaten in ten games and have won four of their last five. Crucially, they have only conceded three goals in eight matches - a far cry from the first half of the season when the club was leaking goals at an alarming rate.

Yates told the club’s website: “When we walked in the door in November, not many people gave us a chance.

“We were a team that was constantly getting beaten and we had to change something. We brought in better players right from the start.

“My players have had to play under intense pressure for 26 games because we’ve constantly had to win.

“The board, the people above me, have given me nearly everything that I’ve asked for and without them we’d have been relegated at the end of February.

“Credit to them for believing in the plan. They backed me in January and saw the quality of players we’ve brought in.”

Yates added: “I’ve never won anything as a manager so this is definitely right up there!

“I’d like to think I’m a decent manager and decent coach. I had four good years at Kidderminster trying to build the club and five decent years at Cheltenham.

“I had been out of the game for 18 months and I’m really enjoying it here. I love coming in and working with the boys and I’m really pleased for everybody involved with the club.”
