Macc Writer Lowe Is Penning His Own Fairytale Season Ending

Keith Lowe wants to be spending his weekends writing headlines when he eventually hangs up his boots.

But this Saturday, he wants to be making the biggest one of his career.

Macclesfield Town will become Vanarama National League champions if they beat Eastleigh in the live BT Sport early afternoon game.

The long-time leaders will get over the line without the help of anyone if they return the Cheshire victorious - just the way they want to do it says the experienced centre-half.

But while Lowe has eyes only on a career crowning glory, the 32-year-old is keeping in mind what he wants to do once “the bones have had enough”.

He told us: “I’m studying for a degree in sports journalism and I’m loving it. I’m not the only one either, our goalkeeper Shwan Jalal is doing it with me - he is totally on it, he’s a better student than I am but I hope he doesn’t read this!

“It was something the PFA suggested to us. So far I’m getting a lot out of it and it’s a really nice option to have.

“We study from home after training and go in to Staffs Uni on a Wednesday. What with three-year-old twins there not much in the way of downtime!

“It’s always an area of the game which has interested me. I love football and would like to stay in the game once I retire but at the moment nothing is further from my mind!

“It’s all about Saturday. We know what it would mean and we’re ready. We just can’t wait for it to come around now.”

If Macclesfield can lift the title Lowe, the former Kidderminster Harriers and York City player, knows what could be behind it all.

“I think we were better odds to be relegated than to win it!” he smiled.

“The thing is I don’t think anyone thought we could do it. That has spurred us on a bit.

“Maybe they thought we would fall away, not last the course. But we have done so far. There’s still one last hurdle to jump but if we can do it, it’ll be a brilliant story.”

And a personal career highlight for the trusty Silkmen centre-back.

“I won the Football League Trophy with Swansea but that was quite a long time ago!” he added.

“I joined just before the semi-finals. This is all about bloody, sweat and tears. This is about a season.

“Being a title winner would mean more to me. I have never won promotion and it would be mean so much to achieve that goal. Not every player gets the opportunty to win a championship so I we’re desperate not to let the chance slip through our fingers.”
