It’s Taken A While But Barrow’s Holker St Hoodoo Is Over!

By Sam Elliott

After five-and-a-half months, 12 matches and plenty of ‘cat kicking’ from everyone, Barrow - finally - had a home win to savour.

And for manager Ady Pennock and his players, it couldn’t have come at a better time.

Last night’s 3-2 victory over Eastleigh was their first since October. Saying three home points was a long time coming is sharply underselling it.

It’s been a long and frustrating wait for the Holker Street faithful, who Pennock has praised for their patience during a run he called ‘nowhere near good enough’.

It may not have been what they needed to drag them out of the bottom four but it was a huge night still in their battle to beat the drop.

Pennock told the Evening News and Mail that his players may have made hard work of it but they got the job done - all that matters in the circumstances.

He said: “It’s huge; it’s a massive result,” said Pennock. “I normally say we have to enjoy it, but I’m not going to enjoy it, I’ll tell you now – we’ve got a massive game on Saturday.

“It was a great game, exciting for everybody, but we didn’t make it easy, did we? They hit the bar, hit the post, we cleared off the line, but we put our bodies on the line and I thought overall we deserved it.

“They threw the kitchen sink at us when it was 3-1, and we concede a couple of sloppy goals, but I’ll take the three points. I said today I’d rather win 7-6, I don’t care if we win 1-0 or 7-6, but it’s a massive three points.”

But he told the paper: “Let’s not get carried away. I’ve said to the players we’ve got a huge game on Saturday and I need the fans to turn up again, bring their sons, bring their daughters, grand-daughters, grandsons, aunties, uncles, nans, grandads, everybody has got to come here on Saturday and really get behind the boys.

“Thank God – and I’m a church boy, I do go to church on Sundays, and he has answered a few prayers today. We needed that win.”
