Gulls Must Learn To Grind Out Results Says Satisfied Owers

Torquay United must learn how to win ugly if they are to turn their Vanarama National League season around.

That is the first impression of new manager Gary Owers, who left Barrow heartbroken after being denied a winning start to life a Plainmoor very late on.

Owers thinks there was plenty of positives and lot to build on for the Gulls but that long trip home would have been so much more enjoyable had they held on.

Torquay still haven't won this season but coming so close in his first game gives Owers confidence that their luck could turn before too long.

“I thought the lads were great," the new manager told the club's website at the 1-1 draw at Holker Street on Saturday.

"We really started well. We got an early goal and that was deserved. Just as the game fell into the closing stages we got a bit too deep.

“The things that Barrow are known for are long throws and balls into the box, and unfortunately we got one of those goals.

“People have got to learn how to win games. I’m sure when I look at it I’ll pick something up in the thirty or forty seconds prior to the goal that we cold have done better.

"It might have been a throw-in where we went short instead of playing percentages. Sometimes you just win ugly. You kick it in the corner and you grind out that win.”

Owers added: "The biggest disappointment is that we couldn’t get over the line at the end. We’re two minutes away from our first win of the season which would have given everyone a massive boost.

"But we’ve got a point away from home and if we win next week then we’re going in the right direction."
