Five Things We Learned From The National League Weekend

By Steven Coney

The Vanarama National League provided plenty of talking points on Saturday across the three divisions.

There were more terrific attendances, plenty of goals and as always, lots of fallout to discuss.

We’ve looked at the results throughout the divisions and picked out five of the most important things from another busy weekend.

There are no easy games in the National League

A cliche yes, but it’s true. Leaders Macclesfield Town had won five of their previous six games and would have expected a fairly routine victory against struggling Solihull Moors at home. Solihull, coming off two wins themselves, performed well at the Moss Rose and left with a goalless draw as the Silkmen’s lead was cut to four points.

Don’t count Sutton United out just yet…

Aldershot Town and Wrexham both picked up big wins on Saturday but Sutton’s was perhaps even more impressive. After a defeat and a draw, they needed to get back on the winning trail but going up to the north-east to face Gateshead is always tough. The U’s were made to wait but young striker Tommy Wright climbed off the bench, struck twice in the final 20 minutes and gave Sutton a vital three points.

Loan signings could decide where the title goes

With the January transfer window now open, plenty of National League clubs have taken the chance to bring in some Football League talent on loan. One of those, Nicke Kabamba, scored the winner for Aldershot at Dover. Kabamba put away plenty for Hampton & Richmond Borough before earning a move to Portsmouth and the Shots will be hoping he can keep finding the back of the net in the enthralling promotion tussle.

Weston-super-Mare are starting to make waves in National League South

We all know how competitive the top of the National League South is. Braintree Town were the only team in the top seven to win on Saturday so it remains as close as it has been for the past few weeks. Just five points separate leaders Dartford and seventh-placed Hemel Hempstead Town. There are clubs on the outside looking in who are starting to pick up the pace too. Weston-super-Mare were victorious at Gloucester on Saturday and have now won three in a row.

National League North is slowly becoming as exciting as the South

Seemingly out of nowhere, the National League North has ignited. Not happy with the South getting all of the credit, it now looks just as intriguing after a mini blip for Salford City. The leaders have picked up just two points in four games and have conceded ten goals along the way. Harrogate Town are now just two points adrift with Brackley a further two behind them. Spennymoor Town and Blyth Spartans also picked up big wins and things are starting to get mighty interesting!
