Five Things We Learned From The National League Weekend

By David Richardson

As the dust settles on another weekend of Vanarama National League action, we've picked the bones out of Saturday's matches.

Danny Rowe can score goals at this level too
After netting a record-breaking 47 goals in the National League North last season, the big question over AFC Fylde striker Danny Rowe was whether he could bang them in a step above. Saturday gave us the answer as he struck twice to give the Coasters a 2-0 win over Torquay United which moved him top of the scorers chart.

Rowe's ten goals have given him the outright lead with Ryan Bird, of Dover, Maidstone's Joe Pigott and Boreham Wood forward Bruno Andrade close behind on nine.

Eastleigh's problems are mounting
They may be a relatively comfortable six points above the National League drop zone but things are looking pretty bleak on the south coast for Eastleigh. Manager Richard Hill thinks so too - he described there being a "dark cloud" over the club following Saturday's 2-0 home defeat to Barrow, who are four points below them.

The Eastleigh fans booed their team off at full-time and while they had seen plenty of disappointing performances this season, Hill suggested the fans had turned in some bad ones too. “I’m now sure how productive it is for the fans to be booing at the end of them," he said. "Sure, they pay their money but if they think doing that after a game of football is productive, then fine. They'll always point the finger at our performances and rightly so, but sometimes supporters have to look at their performance. I can pick a few games out this season where their performance wasn't particularly good."

Wrexham's defence is title material
Dean Keates's side kept their eleventh clean sheet of the season on Saturday meaning they've shut out the opposition in over half of their National League games. If defences win leagues, then Wrexham surely have one worthy of doing so. They've conceded just 12 goals and their weekend win over Ebbsfleet United leaves them a point off leaders Dover Athletic. Incidentally, the table toppers have the second best defensive record with just 13 conceded. It's looking like the title race will go to the wire.

Harrogate Town will keep pushing Salford
As Harrogate slipped up against Spennymoor Town a week ago, Salford stretched their lead at the top of the National League North to seven points. But Town returned to winning ways on Saturday with a 3-1 victory over Boston while Salford won 4-0 against North Ferriby. Harrogate have a game in hand over the leaders and winning on the weekend was the least they could do to try and keep up with Salford. "We placed a huge amount of importance on winning the game," said manager Simon Weaver. "We applied that pressure on the lads because if we're serious about being up there at the business end of the season, we have to win games like this."

Don't predict the National League South title race
If there's a league in English football worth keeping an eye on, it's this one. Just four points separate leaders Dartford down to eighth-placed Hemel Hempstead Town. The Darts took top spot on Saturday as Braintree Town slipped up at home to Weston Super-Mare. Truro City and Havant and Waterlooville both kept the pressure on with wins while Hampton and Richmond made it six consecutive victories to put them fifth and right in the promotion mix. Sixth-placed Chelmsford bounced back from consecutive defeats with three points at rock-bottom Whitehawk. Predict this league if you dare.
