On This Day: Action From The Archives (January 19th)

By Steven Coney

Whilst all eyes are on this weekend’s National League games, we’ve decided to take a minute to look back at seasons gone by.

The last time the National League played on January 19th was during the 2012-13 campaign - one that ended in great drama as Mansfield Town pipped Kidderminster Harriers to the title.

Despite the snow playing havoc with our clubs, there were still a number of games played so let’s see exactly what happened…

With leaders Wrexham not in action, their Welsh rivals Newport County had the chance to grab top spot but blew it at home against struggling Barrow. Matt Flynn and Sean McConville struck to give the Bluebirds a shock 2-0 win that saw them climb off the bottom of the table.

Volunteers arrived at Haig Avenue at 8am to help clear the pitch ahead of Southport's game against Mansfield Town. Unfortunately, the home efforts went unrewarded as Mansfield, eventual champions, climbed to eighth with their fourth straight win. Adam Murray and Lee Stevenson clinched the three points after Shaun Whalley gave Port the lead.

Caretaker manager Alan Lord helped guide Stockport County to an emotional 2-1 win at home against Forest Green Rovers. Lord, stepping in following the sacking of Jim Gannon, was left celebrating three points after Sean Newton and Jon Nolan goals were enough to see off their high-flying visitors, who replied through Reece Styche.

Staff and fans at AFC Telford United also worked hard to ensure their pitch was playable but they had to make do with a point following a goalless draw with Alfreton Town. The Bucks slipped into the bottom four thanks to Stockport’s win.

Kidderminster Harriers’ promotion hopes also took a dent as they went down 1-0 at Macclesfield Town. Kiddy boss Steve Burr, returning to his former club, watched on as his side froze at an icy Moss Rose. Waide Fairhurst scored the only goal of the game for inconsistent Macc.

In the North, Chester extended their lead at the top to 16-points with a comfortable 4-1 win over Stalybridge Celtic. Nathan Jarman, George Horan, Marc Williams and Wes Baynes got the goals for the Blues.

Meanwhile in the South, Salisbury City moved nine points clear at the summit, Jamie White, Elliott Frear and Chris McPhee doing the damage in a 3-1 victory against Staines Town.
