Mellon Wants To See His Tranmere Side Boxing Clever

Micky Mellon expects his Tranmere Rovers side to be fighting fit after a session with boxing trainer Sean Trodden, writes Steven Coney.

Rovers were without a fixture on Saturday as their scheduled National League trip to Woking was postponed due to the Cards' involvement in the FA Cup.

But if the Rovers squad thought they had a nice quiet day lined up, they were greatly mistaken!

Mellon's men were put through their paces by Trodden, a Tranmere fan and trainer of Birkenhead's own lightweight champion Sean Dodd.

Tranmere know they will need to land a few knockout blows over the second half of the season if they are to get their promotion push back on track.

Boss Mellon told the club’s website: “With the squad, it has been maintenance work with them really, keeping them ticking over, because we have had a lot of games in a short amount of time recently.

“We’re still working on the players and their individual improvements as much as we can as well.

“But it’s also a case of recharging the batteries and making sure that they are physically ready as they possibly can for the Torquay game.”

Rovers face a tricky home game against a resurgent Torquay United side on Saturday.

Skipper Steve McNulty and midfielder Jay Harris are both back from suspensions and Mellon is hoping his squad's injury problems will start to ease ahead of the busy festive period.

Rovers face a gruelling schedule of six games in 23 days and that includes a tough trip to leaders Sutton United as well as two games against improving AFC Fylde.

“I imagine that we’ll have a few of the injured lads back,” Mellon, whose side are five points adrift of the play-offs, added.

“Harris and McNulty will return from their suspensions too so we should have a fuller squad to choose from and, obviously, going into the Christmas period with lots of games, that will be important for us.

“The important thing is to try and pick a team who I think will win games for Tranmere. That’s up to me to do and I’ll continue to try and do that.

“Keeping everyone as fit and active as possible in order to do that will be my focus.”
