Heroes And Stars Help Chester Take Total To £75,000

By Sam Elliott

The stars came out to help Chester’s fund raising drive last night - and so did over 2,000 supporters.

Football great and Chester fan Michael Owen and fellow Blues backer Colin Murray put on a special match to bring in money to help the club.

The night was a big success with over £25,000 raised for the National League club.

The sum takes the fans’ fundraising total to over £75,000 and with more plans around the corner it is a real show of strength.

Owen scored but a Chester Select XI beat Colin Murray's All Stars 4-1 with a big crowd watching five goals and a lot of fun.

Former Liverpool and Real Madrid striker Owen, whose father Terry was a former favourite at the Deva Stadium, was more than happy to lend a hand.

Stars past and present came together to raise over £25,000 for Chester FC to help keep the National League club afloat.

“Chester are part of my life,” the ex-England man told the Chester Standard. “Dad played here and scored quite a few goals in the process, the most famous team I’d say when they won promotion and got to the semi-finals of the League Cup.

“Colin rang and said we’re possibly Chester’s most well-known supporters so let’s do something and I said absolutely.

“We decided to put a game on, ringing what felt like millions of players, and fair play the response was brilliant.

“It looks like we’re going to get a big crowd in tonight and raise lots of money for the club.”

"I started at Chester when was 14 and had some great memories of the club, some that I'll never forget.

“It’s is a great thing to try and help them. Smaller clubs, you have to keep these clubs going. You have got to keep these things going, it's all about the grassroots.”
