Saturday Preview: Vanarama National League South

By Sam Elliott

The Vanarama National League South continues this weekend - and could we possibly see a Lazarus-sized recovery completed?

Not so long ago, Welling United were in the bottom three and wondering if their time in the league was coming to an end.

They were right to suggest they may not be playing their football in the South next season - but for a very different reason.

The Wings’ incredible form has seen them shoot into title contention.. They now sit third and a win at home to Concord Rangers will, if results go their way elsewhere, take them to the top of the table.

It’s been quite a restoration job at Park View Road but to hit the summit they need a favour of too along the way.

Truro City play leaders Dartford looking to get their first win since September. They could be thinking now is the time to put that right - the Darts’ stinging FA Cup hammering at home to Swindon, the White Tigers hope, may have knocked them off their stride.

Joint top are Braintree Town and going to improving Poole won’t be easy for Bradley Quinton and his team.

It is certain to be an emotional day for Bobby Wilkinson. He comes up against Hungerford Town for the first time after spending seven glory-filled years with the club.

There is no room for romance, Wealdstone need the points to keep their promotion push firmly on track.

Havant & Waterlooville need to sort their home form out to challenge. Great on the road, Lee Bradbury needs a victory against Hemel Hempstead in front of their own fans but the Tudors have won their last three and don’t let in goals.

“We know our home form isn’t what it should be an we need to come up with some answers,” said Bradbury.

Eastbourne need a reaction. Going down 4-0 at home to Poole Town last time out was not on the agenda. They face Weston-super-Mare looking to silence their doubters.

Bath City managed Jerry Gill needs his first win sooner rather than later, and against East Thurrock United at Twerton Park he hopes this is the moment things begin to come together.

St Albans City’s title quest has been blown off course by a bad winless run but they can get up and running if they take three points from a tricky trip to Chippenham Town.

Against Bath, Whitehawk showed signs of recovery but go to Gloucester City still looking for their first victory.

The FA Cup is all well and good but Oxford City now need to get it together in the National League South.

They can on Saturday - but it’s a demanding trip to Chelmsford City as Oxford return to Essex a week on from their fantastic first round win over Colchester United.

Hampton & RB have won four in a row and Alan Dowson must now be eying up a promotion push.

The Beavers look to make it five straight wins this weekend on the south coast when they take on Bognor Regis Town.
