Owers’ Delight As Gulls Grab Themselves A New Keeper

Torquay United have completed a deal to bring Alex Bass to the club from Portsmouth and manager Gary Owers says it could be a ‘massive signing’, writes Tom Scott.

Making his debut in 2016 - goalkeeper Bass has been in and around the first team for the last season or so and has previously played on loan at Salisbury.

Bass joins on loan for the season, and Owers says the 20-year-old was attracting interest from a number of clubs.

“I feel rather fortunate to get him, to be honest,” he told the club’s official website. “It’s a great signing.”

“There was interest from other League clubs to try and sign him. Thankfully, Portsmouth trust us to look after him for the season.”

“I think it could be a massive, massive signing for us.”

Owers has already strengthened his side well this season with the likes of Asa Hall, Jason Banton, Ben Wynter, George Essuman and Samir Nabi already moving to Plainmoor – and he says he is looking forward to seeing his latest signing in action.

“He’s not far away from the first team at Portsmouth and I think he is going to go on and have a very good career.

“I look forward to seeing him in a Torquay shirt.”

Bass could make his debut when The Gulls get their pre-season schedule underway tomorrow night against Forest Green Rovers
