Mings Ready To Make Chippenham Very Proud

Should Tyrone Mings get the nod he so desperately wants on Tuesday night, there won’t be a group of people happier than those in a little pocket of Wiltshire.

The central defender is under consideration by Gareth Southgate for a place in the England side for their Euro qualifier against Kosovo.

The Three Lions manager called up the Aston Villa player after a tremendous start to the new season. His £26million summer switch from Bournemouth seemed a lot, but manager Dean Smith suggested the fee would grow to be seen as a bargain.

If you would have told the then-Chippenham Town player back in 2012 how much he was worth and how he could be about to represent his country, he would have had a quiet chuckle to himself.

Mings has spoken about his rise from Non-League football, where he learned the game with the now National League South Bluebirds.

“When I was playing football part-time and working as a mortgage adviser I had different goals, playing for England seemed like a different world away," he said.

“I just needed to get back into the professional game at that point.

"I can't say that while I was sat at my desk cold calling or trying to advise people on their mortgages that playing fort England was an achievable goal.

“But I've been able to work with some great coaches and having been able to play for some great clubs, everything has culminated to get me to this point.

“At different times I have had to reassess my goals, with injuries and so forth, but that makes being sat here even sweeter."

He also worked with no Bath City boss Jerry Gill at Bristol Rovers.

“We had Tyrone for four weeks and he had a really good attitude and was really determined to work hard," Gill told Bristol Live.

“You could see there was a really good player there but his body hadn't developed properly and he was physically out of step; tall and languid but he was a little out of control for his size.

“There was no physical power of strength yet.”
