Gulls Won't Throw In The Towel Despite Eastleigh Defeat

Gary Owers believes Torquay United can still pull of an escape act despite this afternoon’s damaging home defeat to Eastleigh.

The Gulls lost the chance to make up ground on the sides above them in a reduced programme but went down 2-1 to the Spitfires at Plainmoor.

To make matters worse, Torquay even missed a late penalty and they remain 11 points from safety.

Manager Owers didn’t take his players to task after the loss but accepts time is running out for their attempt to avoid slipping into the National League South.

“We had a go,” he told TUFCTV. “It’s a game we didn’t deserve to lose but that’s our season in a nutshell.

“We controlled large periods of the game but we suffered because we conceded soft goals.

“It’s going to take the new players time to adapt but we haven’t got much time. As a team and as a group I haven’t got too many complaints.”

Owers hopes to bring in two new players very soon as they look to give their relegation fight a much-needed lift.

“We’ve given goals away that we can cut out and if we can stop doing that quickly we give ourselves a chance,” he said.

“We had the chance to take a point but we missed a penalty - you can’t afford to do that in our position.

“We need improvement all around. I’m working with the majority of the squad I inherited and I’m looking to to get two players in next week to give us a fighting chance.”
