Five Things You May Have Missed In The National League

By Steven Coney

We’re into the final couple of weeks in the Vanarama National League and that means that every point - and goal for that matter - is crucial.

More or less every team across our three divisions still has something to play for so there will be plenty of drama in the rest of April.

Saturday was no different with big goals and big talking points up and down the National League. It was an action-packed day so we’ve picked out five things you may have missed…

Nothing comes easy in the National League!

Macclesfield Town could have secured the title with victory over Leyton Orient. They would have needed Tranmere to drop points too but Orient crashed the early party, drawing 1-1 at the Moss Rose in Saturday’s BT Sport game. The Silkmen know all too well that you earn everything you get in the National League and their wait to celebrate promotion goes on for at least a few more days.

Aldershot and Wrexham need to be careful…

Both Aldershot Town and Wrexham were in the title race up until a month or so ago. Since then, both clubs have suffered from inconsistency and now their play-off spots are on the line. The Shots have won just twice in seven games and know they’ll need to rediscover their form quickly. The Dragons, meanwhile, have really struggled since the departure of boss Dean Keates. One of the clubs could easily miss out on the top seven.

The race against the drop will go down to the wire

Chester are officially relegated and Guiseley are down in all but name but the last two spots are still needing to be filled. Torquay United have given themselves a chance but will need at least six points from their last three games to have any hope. Barrow have games in hand but they need to win them whilst Woking are in real trouble. Hartlepool, Maidstone and Solihull Moors aren’t quite safe yet either - it’s going to be a last day of the season job!

Harrogate continue to breathe down Salford’s neck in the North

Four straight wins for Salford have maintained their three-point advantage at the summit but they still know that any slip-up could see them fall to second. Harrogate’s superior goal difference gives them the edge if they can overhaul the three-point gap. Town have won three in a row themselves to keep up the pace -who will blink first?

Every single goal matters at the top of the National League South

Similar to the North, the National League South championship is being tightly contested between two clubs. Dartford’s slender win at Eastbourne on Saturday kept them at the top whilst Havant & Waterlooville picked up three points against St Albans. Not only are the title chasers level on points but only one goal separates them. The title could well be decided by a single goal.
