First Dolphins Win For Weeks Tastes Sweet For Killick

It’s fair to suggest Poole Town have not enjoyed the start to the 2017-18 season. After finishing in the top five in the Vanarama National League last time around, building on that great first year at Step 2 was hoped for.

But it has certainly not panned out like that as the Dorset club have suffered second season syndrome. They hadn’t won in nine league games before this weekend but at last they had something to cheer.

A 3-2 win at Oxford City was made “even sweeter” for manager Tom Killick as it came against a side also struggling at the bottom of the table. Watch Match Highlights Here.

Killick hopes it can kick-start their season and wants their second half performance to give them hope going into an enforced break.

"The victory is testament to the spirit we showed in the second half as we restricted them to nothing and they resorted to launching balls from the back,” the manager said in an interview with today’s Dorset Echo.

“At half-time I felt we looked inferior and were lucky to go in level, and we couldn’t just carry on doing the same thing and hope for a different outcome.

"We looked very dangerous on the break and were well worth the win in the end. The players deserve credit for executing the plan so well."

Killick added: “Three points is a precious return for us considering we now have a two-week gap before our next game. To have lost or drawn would have put us in a very difficult situation.

“You also have to take into account that we were playing a team who are down in the lower reaches with us, so a win is that much sweeter.”
