Durrell Senses The Silkmen Have The Foxes' Swagger

Unfortunately for Macclesfield Town supporters, they’re not about to become as rich as a plucky few who boldly placed their earnings two years ago.

The other outsiders wearing blue may have famously been 5,000-1 to do the unthinkable, but there’s something quite similar between the current National League leaders and Leicester City, perhaps the most famous Premier League champions of all time.

“I don’t think our odds were quite as good as theirs sadly,” joked Elliott Durrell, the Silkman’s playmaker.

“But you’ve got to take a little inspiration from what Leicester did a few season ago. There’s likenesses there. We aren’t the biggest club in the league, we have the type of togetherness they have and nobody would have thought we would be where we are right now.

“That’s not us saying we’re going to win it, but it’s great to be doing so well. We have to look to Leicester in a lot of ways.”

The Foxes didn’t have to deal with what Macc did on Tuesday night. They were at Maidstone United’s Gallagher Stadium, but the home team weren’t.

With most of the squad stuck in Essex traffic, they instead had a training session and a few drinks on the long trip home. It allowed Sutton United to close the gap to two points.

“We can only control what we can control,” Durrell added. “We’re loving being a part of it and we feel we’re getting better with every game.

“We had a bit of a period where things weren’t going our way but I think the way we responded from that shows how good the spirit is here. Nobody sulked, we just got on with it. We’ve given ourselves a chance.”

Durrell spoke back in September about the ‘feeling’ he had the Macclesfield’s decent start could actually turn into something special.

They weren’t firing at the time, and had just lost late on at Sutton United. But the midfielder saw something coming,

“It’s funny, a few of us went out for a coffee the other day and started talking about that subject,” he added.

“I asked when was the point everyone knew something was happening, what was the time you thought things would go this well.

“It took the lads more time, but I knew from the minute I turned up we could do something this year. The strange thing is that it was a very new squad and that doesn’t really happen.

“I was one of a lot of new boys this summer, but I think that actually helped. There were a fair few new players, it wasn’t one or two trying to fit in. It was all new and we clicked quite quickly,” said Durrell, whose side are at home to Barrow on Saturday afternoon.
