Belief Is Growing For Improving Gateshead

By Steven Coney

Steve Watson has called for his improving Gateshead side to go on a run after a crucial victory at strugglers Chester.

Goals from Paddy McLaughlin, Jordan Burrow and Jordan Preston were enough to sink out of sorts Chester 3-1 at the Deva Stadium.

Watson thought the victory could have been much more comprehensive but the three points are what counts for the Heed as they climbed up to 15th.

Home games against Woking, Maidstone United and Wrexham are next up for Gateshead and the boss wants to see Saturday’s performance replicated going forward.

Watson told the club’s website: “We knew Chester were desperate for a result and would come at us early.

“When the game opened up after the first 20 minutes I thought we looked great. We knew a team would be on the end of a hiding against us sooner or later and that should have happened today.

“If we’d have been 5-0 up after an hour, it wouldn’t have been unfair. I’m really disappointed we didn’t keep a clean sheet but there were so many positives to take.

“Hopefully the last two games will have given the players the belief that we’re doing the right things. We need to go on a run now.”
