What's In Store In The National League South On Saturday?

By Sam Elliott

The National League South returns on Saturday - and it’s hello to a famous football face.

Gary Johnson may not have seen it coming a month ago, as he was preparing Cheltenham Town for a stab at promotion to League One.

But he will this weekend take charge of his first game as Torquay United manager at Hungerford Town after he agreed to replace Gary Owers.

The former Yeovil and Bristol City boss was a National League champion in 2003 and 2016 and said: “I believe I can lead the club back to League Two and beyond.”

He could ask the man in charge of the Gulls' tennants Truro City all about how to win your first game in the division.

New boss Leigh Robinson got off to a dream start as the White Tigers won for the first time this term at Gloucester. Third place and very much in-form Hampton are the challenge this time.

Gavin Rose wants Dulwich Hamlet fans to make all the difference as he takes his team to face league leaders Woking.

There’s no confirmation yet who Billericay Town’s new manager will be.

But if they beat Dartford at home, then whoever does take over will be in charge of a side pushing hard at the top.

Chippenham Town have beaten them recently of course, and Torquay United and Concord.

Now manager Mark Collier is urging them to perform in games not against the top end clubs. They place Gloucester City at home this weekend.

In our feature game this weekend, two promotion contenders lock horns.

Wealdstone host Chelmsford City and we will be at Grosvenor Vale for behind-the-scenes coverage and reaction.

Eastbourne have had a good start themselves, and are at home to Slough Town while St Albans City and Concord Rangers do battle in Hertfordshire.

Bath City are looking for win number six of the season, but they need to pick thing up on the road.

Oxford City are no fools on their own pitch and have beaten Wealdstone, Torquay and St Albans there inside the last four weeks.

Weston-super-Mare are the only club without a win yet, but manager Marc McGregor thinks that will soon change.

They have a chance to put things right on Saturday with a home game against Hemel Hempstead, Dean Brennan’s team haven’t won since the second game of the season and they’ve lost their last three.

Welling United are climbing and they want to make it six unbeaten when East Thurrock visit Park View Road.
