Owers Angry As Torquay Are Left With Just The League

Gary Owers thinks he picked the wrong team as Torquay United exited another cup competition at the first stage.

The Gulls lost 4-0 at home to divisional rivals Maidstone United - and the supporters were far from pleased.

Owers was angry himself. At his players and at his team selection as they crumbled against the Stones in the first round.

Now Torquay have just their shot at survival to focus on as they look to avoid relegation in the National League South.

"Over the last 14 weeks we have had the favour of the fans support, and I appreciate that, but we have lost some of that today, and that's fair enough,” he told Devon Live.

"People paid good money to come and watch that, and I take on board some of the things aimed at me.

"One gentleman said at half-time that I picked the wrong team, and on reflection he was probably right.

“I wanted to give some of the other players an opportunity to show me whey they are here. The outcome was horrific.

“Overall I have got to say it was a pretty pathetic show, a really bad day for us.”

Torquay next travel to Eastleigh on Boxing Day as they look to pull away from the National League relegation zone.
