Watson Certain Port Will Find Winning Formula

Liam Watson is sure that it will only be a matter of time before his Southport team find the right formula and begin to pick up points this season, writes Tom Scott.

Watson is back at Haig Avenue for the third time in his managerial career having previously had success with the Port in the 2004/05 and 2009/10 campaigns.

You’d be brave to write off Southport and Watson this season – after adding more quality to his already improving squad, there’s a sense of optimism on Merseyside despite the less than ideal start.

Speaking to the club’s official YouTube channel after a 3-1 defeat to Altrincham, Watson played down his side’s start to the season and said it won’t be long until the results start to come.

“I’m not too deflated in what the players gave me,” he said. I would say at the end of the day that they [Altrincham] looked like a side that have been playing together for quite a while and we looked like a side who haven’t.

“It’s a new team, it’s trying to bed it in. Yes we’ve had pre-season but it’s pre-season, they’re false games so the last couple of games were tough but we’ve got good players here and good players tend to find the formula and then I’ve got to find who gels with who.

“I can’t fault the work rate, I can’t fault the effort but I would say after the first goal went it, the pressure looked like it was released off us because then we started to play.”

Next up for Southport is another home game against Stockport, who themselves will be looking to improve on an inconsistent start.

But Watson won’t be tailoring his training to Stockport, instead focusing on ironing out his side’s problems and trying to improve team cohesion.

“We just need to work on what we’re trying to do, we need to work on the creative side of our game. I’m not overly worried about where we are defensively but definitely the other end of the pitch we’re just looking for something to gel, something to click.

“I’ve just got to try and find a balance, a formula in the team that will get us busy and bright. We’ll get stronger and we’ll start picking up wins,” he added.
