Team Of The Weekend: National League South

By Sam Elliott

The National League South weekend saw two of the sides chasing the title have to put their feet up - and two of the others drop points.

Yes, it wasn’t ideal for anyone at the top of the league and for the first time in quite a while none of the top teams tasted victory for one reason or another.

So you won’t be shocked to see some players from outside of the title race making up our Team of the Weekend.

As always, we pick the brains of the managers and club officials as well as the journalists at the games to make sure we’ve got a few extras pairs of eyes and ears.

Here is what we’ve come up with following Saturday’s National League South matches.

The National League South Team of the Weekend:

Goalkeeper: Jonathan North (Wealdstone)
Played a big part in the Stones’ 3-0 win at Bognor and proved once again why he is one of the league’s most reliable.

Defender: Jack Batten (Bath City)
A goal and a clean sheet is good enough for us! Bath clinched an important win over Concord Rangers and Batten was brilliant.

Defender: Calvin Ekpiteta (East Thurrock)
Two goals in the 4-1 win over Oxford City land Ekpiteta not only a place in the Team of the Weekend, but the captain’s armband too!

Defender: Ian Gayle (Wealdstone)
Another goalscoring defender who didn’t put a foot wrong. Can Wealdstone finally start climbing the table?

Midfield: Dean Evans (Chippenham Town)
A great free-kick helped the Bluebirds stunt the leaders - a point against Dartford should see Chippenham push on.

Midfield: Matt Saunders (Hemel Hempstead)
This was a big win for Hemel at Braintree and Saunders was superb. If they can beat Chelmsford City on Tuesday, who knows what they could do.

Midfield: Jeffrey Monakana (Welling United)
His team-mate grabbed the headlines down at Poole Town but Monakana showed his class throughout.

Midfield: James Morton (Bath City)
Starting to really show his quality for Jerry Gill. The on-loan Bristol City player has a bright future.

Striker: Ky Marsh-Brown (Whitehawk)
Whitehawk won again - and although he didn’t get on the scoresheet his performance won him many admirers.

Striker: Alfie Pavey (Dartford)
Another two goals for in-form Pavey - he has his eyes not only on the National League South title, but on the Golden Boot now as well.

Striker: Bradley Goldberg (Welling United)
Two excellent finishes mean Welling are still very much in the hunt for a top seven finish this season.

Substitutes:
Lukas Lidakevicius (East Thurrock)
Ben Herd (St Albans City)
Ian Simpemba (Eastbourne Borough)
Marvin Brooks (Poole Town)
Abobaker Eisa (Wealdstone)

Where next?

McMahon: Draw Shows Strength Of Ebbsfleet Squad A 0-0 draw against Aldershot Town left Daryl McMahon pleased with what he had seen.
In-Form Spitfires Are Starting To Take Flight At Last Eastleigh secured their third straight win with a narrow victory at Maidstone United but boss Andy Hessenthaler admits his side rode their luck.
