Single Goal Victories For Stones & Tigers On Monday Night

By Steve Whitney

After the `Beast from the East` disappeared, it was good to see football back on Monday night with two matches in the Vanarama National League South.

Welling United travelled to Grosvenor Vale to play Wealdstone looking to move level on points with fifth-placed St Albans City.

And in front of a crowd of 783, it looked as though the eighth-placed Wings were heading for a point in a game that wasn`t pretty but was competitive.

Them, shortly after the board had gone up indication 4 minutes of stoppage time at the end of the game, Wealdstone grabbed the only goal of the game when, following a corner, Ricky Wellard (pictured) headed home to win the game for the hosts which, overall was tough on Welling, but lifted the Stones to within three points of the visitors.

The other game was at Evesham`s Jubilee Stadium where Gloucester City took on a Chippenham Town side looking for points to pull clear of the drop zone.

The Tigers started the game five points better off than their Wiltshire rivals and it was a gam devoid of much in the way of goalmouth action, especially in the opening 45 minutes.

Gloucester had a couple of half-chances and hit the crossbar in the second half.

And then, with 12 minutes remaining, City broke the deadlock when Ethan Moore managed to poke the ball home after a goalmouth scramble following a corner.

Loanee Rhys Kavanagh came close to doubling the Tigers lead shortly afterwards and Bluebirds` keeper Conor Thompson did well to tip over a chip from the same player.

But the hosts held firm to gain revenge for the defeat at Hardenhuish Park in September.
