On This Day: Action From The Archives (February 14th)

Romance is in the air so we’ve decided to take a minute and give some love to seasons gone by in the National League.

The last time the National League played on Valentine’s Day was during the 2014-15 campaign - and it was an exciting one.

Barnet ended up winning the title by a point but their lead at the top was cut on an entertaining Saturday three years ago…

The Bees were beaten in the game of the day as Wrexham threw a spanner in the works with victory at the Racecourse. Robbie Evans scored the winner but keeper Andy Coughlin was praised for keeping Barnet at bay.

That allowed Bristol Rovers to close the gap and youngster Tom Lockyer netted a second-half winner as the Gas won 1-0 at play-off mainstays Grimsby Town.

Fellow title hopefuls Macclesfield Town, meanwhile, had to settle for a point on the road at struggling Southport. Richard Brodie scored a late leveller for Port after Danny Whitaker has put the Silkmen ahead.

FC Halifax Town continued their climb towards the play-off places with a 3-2 home victory over Dover Athletic. Lois Maynard, Richard Peniket and Jamie Jackson got the goals for the Shaymen whilst Tom Murphy and Dan Holman replied for Dover.

At the other end of the table, AFC Telford United lost a must-win goal in excruciating circumstances against fellow strugglers Dartford. Tony Gray netted twice for the Bucks to level after Andy Pugh’s double for the Darts. However, Danny Ventre’s own goal on the stroke of full-time condemned Telford to defeat.

Nuneaton Town gave their faint survival hopes a boost, though, with a 2-1 victory at Gateshead. Boro moved off the bottom of the table thanks to goals from Andy Brown and Theo Streete.
