McCallum's Relief At Getting Off The Mark For Eastleigh

By Steven Coney

Paul McCallum is confident of staying in the goals after netting his first for Eastleigh in their thrilling draw with Bromley on Saturday.

The striker, signed from Leyton Orient in the summer, has had an injury-plagued first few months at Eastleigh but is finally off the mark for his new club.

McCallum had put the Spitfires 2-0 up before Bromley roared back to lead 3-2. McCallum scored again to equalise and complete his hat-trick before Louis Dennis looked to have won it for the visitors late on.

However, Sam Matthews scored at the death to give Richard Hill’s men a point following an eight-goal rollercoaster.

McCallum has had a tough time of it so far at the Silverlake Stadium but is hopeful that his first Eastleigh goals can spark an upturn for both himself and the club.

“It’s a big relief,” he told Eastleigh’s YouTube channel. “It had been eight or nine games and I haven’t scored or really had any chances.

“The chances seemed to fall to me (on Saturday) and I’ve always believed that if I do get chances, I will take them. Now I’ve got to crack on.

“We were frustrated because we were 2-0 up and we’ve got enough professionalism and experience in the changing room to see the game out.

“We made some mistakes and they went ahead 3-2 but we showed great character to grab the equaliser.”
